Let's rethink the how, not the cow. This is why I think meat tax addresses the wrong problem. Denmark has introduced the world’s first carbon tax on animal agriculture, a policy that may not support a socially just and inclusive food system transition. In my World Economic Forum op-ed, I advocate for responsible policies that address the rising demand for animal protein during times of resource scarcity, while avoiding punishing farmers or consumers. It's vital to facilitate practices that require fewer and better-managed animals: we recommend promoting regenerative smallholder farming alongside new production systems such as cellular agriculture, precision fermentation, and algal production. I fear that Denmark's tax does not efficiently promote these goals. Learn more about my position in the full op-ed you can find via the link in the comments below.

Two Regen Agri legends, Andrew Ardington and Peter Byck on the stage in Cape Town. Just before watching the first episode of a 4-part docuseries - Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there). The documentary series explores the world of adaptive cattle farmers and their conventional farming neighbours. Alongside this journey, a team of pioneering scientists conduct groundbreaking research, investigating the costs and benefits of grazing practices in harmony with nature versus those in conflict with it. The Q&A session was particularly interesting and especially when it came to conventional farmers being super curious about what their neighbour regen farmers were doing - seeing the positive impact and results from these practices, but still not feeling free to walk over to them, to ask the questions on their mind. But isn't it so for most businesses. What is holding us back from engaging with others in our network and industry. We can all learn from each other - on both sides of the fence. The private sector is a catalyst for the transformative change in agriculture ahead. 🛣️ In a recent report, the UN Environment Programme finds that the financial #ClimateAdaptation needs of developing countries are 10-18 times as big as international public finance flows, leaving an opportunity for the private sector to play a pivotal role. Seed companies have the chance to translate their market intelligence into breeding goals, addressing specific climate-related challenges. 👉 The result? Innovative crop varieties that help maximize farmers’ chances of finding options suitable for their local conditions. My last two posts outlined the problem of "food miles". Food miles simply represent the distance food travels from production to consumption. The longer the distance, the more waste and degradation is factored in. And the fuel costs. And the environmental costs. Lots of different solutions, but here is how we at Eden Green are solving for it.
