Dear Learners,
Welcome to the 5th Technical Thursday (TT-5) session. Today, I will address the queries I have received regarding last Technical Thursday(TT-4).
Q.1 What are the other components located on the pump's suction and discharge sides?
A reducer is situated on the pump suction side, whereas an expander is positioned on the pump discharge side to connect the main pipe with the pump's suction and discharge nozzles. There are two types of reducers: the concentric type and the eccentric type. It is crucial to use an eccentric reducer with the flat side up to prevent trapping vapors as the larger suction line transitions to the pump's suction nozzle. Furthermore, drain connections are also provided to empty the suction and discharge lines for pump maintenance.
Q.2 Why MCF line is not provided in reciprocating pumps?
Reciprocating pumps are positive displacement pumps. They deliver a constant flow rate regardless of the discharge pressure and maintain high efficiency across a wide range of flow rates. The pump components are designed to operate effectively even at minimal flow rates, which eliminates the need for a minimum circulation flow line. Reciprocating pumps are equipped with Pressure Safety Valves (PSVs) in the discharge line to address scenarios of blocked discharge outlets. The set pressure of these PSVs is equal to or less than the design pressure of the discharge line. If the PSVs pop up, their discharge is routed to the pump's suction side.
Q.3 What is the difference between Spill Back Control and Anti Surge Control ?
The reciprocating compressor is equipped with a spill back control valve, which redirects excess flow back to the compressor suction to prevent over pressurization of the discharge line. On the other hand, centrifugal compressors are fitted with an anti-surge control valve to prevent surging, which is a dynamic instability characterized by rapid and repeated flow reversals. Surging is not an issue in reciprocating compressors as they operate on a positive displacement principle.
