What’s behind a political debate? Since the first televised US presidential debate between Nixon and Kennedy, much has changed in the relationship between political candidates and voters. Most notably, advanced data-collection techniques, social media, and, more recently, AI have created new communication channels and opportunities to connect with communities. In other words, technology has transformed voters into fans. DSPolitical's own Mark Jablonowski joins Ed Ludlow on Bloomberg Technology to discuss AI content in political campaigns and how our tech makes the ads we run in support of Democratic candidates safe. Mark expresses on the matter, "We make sure that we're reviewing the content of the ads that we run for factual information, making sure that we're working with only people that we know who are actually purchasing the ads. We make sure that we are working with all of the state and local regulatory environments, which has become increasingly complex. And ultimately we try and make that in a turnkey package that allows Democratic candidates and causes to run effective media campaigns." https://lnkd.in/e2Qq_cWM

https://lnkd.in/eiJd9Jkb Yeah, absolutely warn people about disinformation. The bigger question about deepfakes in a political context, though, is not "Are they realistic enough?" Deepfakes will be more damaging by supporting and reinforcing existing political narratives, not necessarily by convincing the unconvinced. So I think the better question will be "Will political consultants embrace the reinforcement role?" and use deepfakes to solidify the existing polarization. It's a bit pedantic, but I think deepfakes support reinforcing existing belief over changing minds. They're more effective at giving people "evidence" to support their existing worldview and building up the schema that shuts down other points of view. That I have to think about this is awful and ugly.

An AI political campaign caller called Ashley. What could possibly go wrong? (For starters, calling it "Ashley"). "Ashley is one of the first examples of how generative AI is ushering in a new era of political campaigning in which candidates use technology to engage with voters in ways increasingly difficult to track." "No rules directly apply to what Civox is doing. Federal Trade Commission regulations ban telemarketers from making robocalls to people on the Do Not Call Registry, but the list does not apply to political calls - and Civox's activity, with its "personalized" messages, does not qualify as robocalling." "Civox has decided to give Ashley a robotic-sounding voice and disclose she is an AI, despite not being legally required to do so." #AIEthics #DigitalEthics #GenerativeAI https://lnkd.in/ePzsWNPp

"Misinformation will continue to harm democracy in this election cycle: Project Liberty" Yes! Unfortunately this is very true. Analysis of some potential causes of disinformation, which exacerbate the polarization of our society: What I refer to as “the destructive polarization of society” is a deep-rooted, erosion of civilized societal norms. There are hundreds of contributing factors; however, I am focusing on what I respectfully believe is the primary cause of the direct assault on our way of life, our democratic form of government, the rule of law, and that is disinformation. “The manipulation of facts—augmented by hateful rhetoric—that yields malicious distortions of the truth, and therefore disinformation.” (You may be a victim of disinformation at some point. I certainly have been). The intentional distortion of facts is an assault on our dignity. The information manipulation, fueled by hate, leads to the distortion of facts, and malignant conspiracy theories. When lies are shared on social-media channels, they undermine our democracy, the rule of law, and safety One example, of hundreds, is the ongoing falsehood that the 2020 Presidential election was “stolen”. Of course, if we study the facts, data, and the empirical evidence, we know that it was not stolen. What are the solutions to combat the proliferation of disinformation? One simple/logical solution is: “Thinking.” Some 500 years ago, René Descartes stated: “Cogito, ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”). Today, many members of society abdicated the practice, choosing to adopt the opposite: “I am; therefore, I do not need to think.” The innovative technologies also allow harmful manipulation of facts yielding instantaneous disinformation. Segments of society exploit the communication to manipulate messaging in real time for their hateful reasons. Please follow the facts, not conspiracy theories. Register and VOTE!
