Empathy is now considered by some as the most important characteristic of a leader. Being more empathetic though can be really difficult. Here are a couple of tips to help: 🎯 1. Be curious, not judgemental - If you've watched Ted Lasso, you'll know what we mean; if you haven't, it means approaching conflict from a place of curiosity. You don't want to win the argument; you want to understand what the other person thinks, and then you work out the best solution for both of you. 💭 2. "Help me understand" - Are you still struggling to be curious? A great phrase to use is "help me understand". Instead of banging on with your point of view or asking the other person to repeat again, ask them "help me understand what you're telling me". It shows humility and that you are genuinely interested in their point of view. You then have to listen! At Secret Source, we get the best results when our teams work together. Being empathetic is a crucial trait of high performing, collaborative teams. https://lnkd.in/d6a7RYqb #Empathy #Leadership #CompanyCulture

It can be tempting to believe that being 'the boss' means that you need to have all the answers – people are looking to you to lead, and that means being decisive, right? Actually, no – it’s ok not to have all the answers. In fact, it’s more inclusive, encourages growth, empathy, fosters collective ownership, psychological safety, and greater comfort in embracing problem solving when you can invite your team into a space where you are willing to openly admit your mistakes, encouraging your team to learn from each other’s experiences. So how do you role-model vulnerability-based leadership? Here are some sentences to get you started: “Here’s what I’m currently struggling with…” “I made a mistake, and here’s what I learned from it…” “I don’t have all the answers, and I need your help to figure it out…” “How should we be thinking about this…?” “What are the biggest challenges we face as a team, and how can I support you with them?” “Is there anything you’re struggling with that you’d like to discuss?” Are there anymore you would add? #peertoboss #naiiveleaders #leadershipdevelopment #vulnerability #psychologicalsafety #youcollective

Does it matter what people's intentions are when conflict erupts? It’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of blaming others for having bad intentions. But is winning the argument worth more than finding a solution? Wholehearted leaders know that in moments of tension, it’s not about proving who’s right — it’s about keeping calm, staying curious, and fostering collaboration. Transform conflict into a chance to build trust and solve problems more effectively by: - Focusing on the facts - Asking open questions - Resisting the pull of emotional contagion How do you keep conflict constructive? #Leadership #ConflictResolution #TeamCollaboration #EmotionalIntelligence #WholeheartedLeaer

It's difficult to open up a conversation when both sides are pushing. Conversation and communication are a compromise if your end goal is to get a better understanding and agree on a way forward. If both people are pushing or pulling at the same time, you both remain stuck where you are. What I have learned is that an "open door policy" literally means letting the other person's conversation in too, not just the person. I like to start every coaching conversation with the first 15 minutes is theirs to talk about whatever they want to talk about, what's most important to them. Why? If you want some new information to go in, I've found it helpful to let the other person free up that space by talking about whatever is most important to them and is forefront of their mind. When a person feels heard, they are more likely to have space to listen. #leadership #learninganddevelopment #communicationskills #conversations #culture

𝗜𝘀 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? I used to think so until one critical project changed my view. During a critical project for a high-profile client, a major component fell short. With deadlines looming, anxiety was high. In an all-hands meeting, I faced a choice: hide my anxiety or be honest. I chose honesty, I openly admitted the situation's severity and my concerns. This wasn’t easy—as leaders, we're expected to project confidence. Yet, this honesty created a safe space for everyone to share and collaborate. We brainstormed redistributed tasks, and sought external help, shifting from anxiety to determination. Ultimately, we delivered the project successfully. This experience taught me that vulnerability doesn’t undermine leadership; it fosters trust, transparency, and collaboration. Leading with authenticity and empathy is not just effective—it's essential! 💡 This graphic was too good not to share. Too many misunderstandings and rash decisions are made because of a lack of clear communication when conflict arises. Conflict is evident if you are interacting with other humans, so learning how to maturely and respectfully deal with conflict is essential. Great leaders understand that as conflict arises the best way to deal with it is to have a face to face, in-person conversation. Yes, this can be intimidating, especially if dealing with conflict makes you want to run and hide, but it is vital so that the issue doesn't grow into something bigger than it needs to. So, if you're dealing with conflict be brave, stand up, put your shoulders back, and go have that crucial conversation with the person that you need to. Typically, it can be resolved as both parties remain respectful and try to see where the other person is coming from. ➡➡ We are here to help individuals and organizations thrive. Building Trust Through Empathetic Leadership In the words of Tim Cook, "Defend your partner/teammate in public, correct them in private." This principle has been a guiding light in my journey, and it's one I believe can transform the way we work together. 🤝 Trust is the cornerstone of any successful team. It's built when we feel supported by our peers, especially in the face of challenges. 🛡️ Defending each other doesn't mean ignoring mistakes—it means fostering an environment where feedback is constructive, not critical, and where every team member feels valued. 👥 Correcting in private respects individual dignity and encourages growth. It's a testament to empathetic leadership, where the focus is on uplifting rather than undermining. I hope this approach sparks more teamwork and strengthen our bonds. Because when we trust, we triumph. I am also continuing to learn & follow this path one day at a time 😊. #Teamwork #Leadership #Empathy #GrowthMindset #TrustBuilding

I help leaders generate joy at work and deconstruct discontent. Joy Generator | Certified Working Genius Facilitator
Do you run FROM or TOWARD conflict? I work with many leaders who find it scary. They avoid it. However, resolving team conflict is a golden opportunity to strengthen trust. When approached correctly, it becomes a catalyst for deeper understanding and cohesion. When a team tackles conflict head-on: ☑ Team members start feeling heard and valued. ☑ They learn that their perspectives, even when they differ from the majority, are important to the group's success. ☑ A sense of safety allows everyone to voice their thoughts without fear of backlash. Healthy conflict teaches us about our teammates—their thought processes, values, and concerns. We start to see each other not as opponents in an argument but as collaborators in our shared goals. But here's the thing… Modeling how to engage in healthy conflict—showing empathy, listening actively, and seeking common ground—starts with the leader. So how’s your comfort in conflict? ——— I help leaders generate more joy at work. Join The Joy Generation newsletter for weekly tips and encouragement. 🔗 in profile. #conflict #leadership #coaching
