Selecting the Right Cyber Security Framework: A Recap In a recent webinar titled "Selecting the Right Cyber Security Framework for Your Organisation," Robert Kirtley, CISO at Virtuelle Group, and Ray Panta, Founder of Cyberensic, co-presented a session focused on navigating various cyber security frameworks. The webinar unpacked various frameworks, including: #ISO27001 A comprehensive and internationally recognised standard, offering a structured approach but demanding leadership commitment and a potentially complex implementation. #Essential8 Developed by the Australian Cyber Security Centre, this framework prioritises information technology system hardening through a less complicated approach. #NIST: This all-encompassing framework provides a detailed roadmap, but requires substantial resource allocation. #SOC2: Focusing on control measures for organisational processes, SOC offers a lighter resource burden compared to ISO 27001 or NIST. #PCIDSS: The prescriptive Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is mandatory for organisations handling credit card transactions. These frameworks are interoperable and can be combined for a more robust security posture. The webinar stressed several factors to consider when selecting a cyber security framework: - Compliance Requirements: Certain frameworks, such as PCI DSS for credit card transactions, are required based on industry regulations. - Business Need: Contractual obligations and other business-specific needs may influence framework selection. - Geographic Reach: The organisation's geographical footprint can influence framework selection based on regional or national security standards. - Current Security Posture: An honest assessment of your existing cyber security program will help determine the right framework for your maturity level. - Resource Availability: Resource limitations, including budget and personnel expertise, should be factored into the decision. This groundbreaking report, developed in collaboration with the European Commission and the NIS Cooperation Group, provides a clear snapshot of the cybersecurity landscape during the critical phase of the NIS2 Directive transposition. Key Takeaways for Practitioners: 1.Policy Evolution: The EU’s frameworks, including NIS2, CRA, and CSOA, are setting new benchmarks for cybersecurity governance. 2.Persistent Threats: Ransomware, DDoS, and state-sponsored attacks demand continuous vigilance and robust defenses. 3.Supply Chain Security: As a crucial area of focus, this aligns closely with the challenges I encounter in my work supporting secure IT environments. 4.Cybersecurity Skills Gap: Initiatives like the Cybersecurity Skills Academy resonate deeply with my journey in cybersecurity, and I encourage others to invest in building these critical capabilities.
