Over the last two years, my team and I have scaled V1 @ Michigan from a scrappy events team to a vibrant community reaching thousands of students — it’s been the journey of a lifetime, and we’re still just scratching the surface in our mission to skew the University of Michigan's culture towards building. V1’s in an exciting place right now — as we bring back Startup Fair to connect top technical talent to fast-growing startups, scale up resources for our pre-idea incubator, and continue rallying builders at Ship-It — I find myself wishing I had another two years to spearhead this next chapter! Beyond hyped for our next generation of leadership. What made you originally want to be an engineer? Because my Dad was an engineer on the Apollo Mission and he came home and talked about how his teams were better when there were female mathematicians on the team. This discussion between Melinda French Gates and her daughter Phoebe is a great example of how influential early role models are. Melinda's Dad and his female #STEM colleagues were pivotal in inspiring her to consider and subsequently pursue a career in engineering. We don't know what jobs will look like in the future, but as Melinda predicts, we know that computer science and #AI will have a massive impact on our society. So, it's imperative that women have equal opportunities in creating the innovations that will shape our world. Collaboration of different experiences and perspectives are key in creating technology that works for all. Walking out of the Southeastern Conference headquarters after working with them, the tagline hit me harder than it ever has. The tagline is “It just means more” and in this new era, it couldn’t be more true. It just means more to the players. The money is getting larger and college isn’t a pit stop to getting to the pros to make life changing money. College provides an opportunity to create generational wealth today, if you give the players the tools to win the money game. Tommorow is today. It just means more to the college programs. Providing a money experience to players and their families set schools and conferences apart. A better experience brings in better players and better players produce championships. Championships increase revenues (and it’s more than just tickets and tv money, more wins have been shown to increase enrolllent, so everyone wins). It just means more to us. Anyone who has worked with us, knows that we are different. This business was born from a summer day in 1992. I walked into my house in Green Bay and my father had been cut. His career was over after training camp. Opportunities don’t last a lifetime, but what we take from them can. We fight to make sure each player’s opportunity is the springboard to change their lives, their families lives, and their communities lives. It just means more. 🎇 Celebrating wins and learnings of 2023, in a world deeply in need of justice, peace, and equity. 🎀 Some moments crystalize the positive impact of our team's work that I am especially grateful for as we close out the year: 🙌 Expanding our work to our first new school partner, IN-Tech Academy, led by David Weissberg. We are so proud of our partnership and excited for our work together this year and beyond. Check out our first ever College Career March video below! 🙌When a student opens a college acceptance email and falls to the floor with joy, feeling the victory of their hard work and determination. 🙌When a donor calls me to express how excited they are about our work to create environmental workforce pathways for our students and alumni and asks how they can become more involved. 🙌 When a teacher says, this internship experience has changed my student’s life. 🙌When an alumna texts me to let me know that it was our college trip tour their junior year that pushed them to apply to and attend college.
