When you start a business or design a product, you have to let your empathy lead the way.
If that sounds counterintuitive, (business & tech don’t typically have an “empathy” vibe in our culture) …remember that as a consumer, all you want from the things you use is for the designer of those things to understand how to solve your root problem.
Not just take your money and slap on a bandaid.
The only way to get to the core issue is to dive into User Experience (UX) research before you begin to build.
As a founder, you might think you already know all about the problem you’re solving. But trying to sell someone else your solution will immediately reveal that your solution isn’t always the right flavor for them.
Before you talk to a developer, talk to at least 50 people who have felt the pain you’re trying to heal. Now you’re halfway there.
Once you’ve designed your solution, follow up with those same people. Show them how you plan to solve their problem.
They’ll be so encouraging! It will really seem like you’re resonating.
Then, ask them to actually take out a form of payment and pre-pay for your solution.
Describe how wonderful it will be, how free of pain your solution will make their lives.
Ask for just 10% down and assure them of a quality guarantee.
If they don’t pull out their wallet and thank you for the privilege of getting in early on this amazing experience, you’ve got to start over.
Hopefully I just saved a few of you $150,000 worth of developing the wrong thing.
