Bale grazing… The reduction in diesel use over winter, the additional area back in the rotation post winter and the additional growth in recovery over the bale area especially when ot gets dry. No brainer. I’ve crunched the numbers it’s financially competitive, before any consideration to increased organic matter, sequestration of carbon, improved water infiltration and soil health. No consents (prove me wrong).
Farmer at Westridge Farm, Deep thinking, Systems thinking, 🇳🇿 Adopting Regenerative Farming systems for soil, plant, animal & world health.
A good chance to get along to Melissa & Deane’s and have a good discussion about winter bale grazing (hay). They have made some brave moves towards soil building and adopting regenerative techniques on their farm. Hear from others including Agresearch’s Ross Monaghan, and farmer Dylan Ditchfield who is also practicing bale grazing (hay) as a transition wintering method. In 6 winters hay bale grazing here we’ve only had to resow 6% of the total wintering area for those 6 years. Large organic matter deposits rebuilding previously mined arable soils, and aiding plant diversity and soil life in the process, yes it’s a large disruption event but one with overall positive outcomes not comparative to monoculture fodder beet and kale crops which largely have negative outcomes/externalities #water #Soil #animal #soilfoodweb #organicmatter

BALE GRAZING BENEFITS ➕ Sam Beaumont of certified Gowbarrow Hall Farm explains why he uses #balegrazing. Bale grazing improves soil health, adding organic matter that can be trampled in by the animals, and increases worm activity and carbon sequestration, while providing the animals with a natural diet of pasture. It extends the grazing season and means that animals can be kept out for longer, sometimes all year round. Farmers implementing this system cite motivations relating to cost reductions, soil carbon management and animal health as key motivations. Although the underpinning data to support this is currently lacking, Pasture for Life, alongside #AHDB & #InnovativeFarmers, are leading the research into collecting the data and evidence for bale grazing and its benefits as an innovative and viable outwintering strategy. 🌾 Quiet Achievements at Heartline Grazing 🌾In the world of cattle grazing, sometimes the most profound achievements speak softly. At Heartline Grazing, thanks to the meticulous breeding and grazing strategies from Brown Cattle & Country Consultants, we're observing steers ready for feedlots at younger ages, milk teeth still in place. Moreover, our grassfed bullocks are reaching weights of 650kgs with just 2 teeth, a marker of thoughtful stewardship and care. These milestones, though modest, are pivotal - showcasing our commitment to sustainable and efficient cattle production. Here's to the quiet progress that paves the way for future success.#HeartlineGrazing #BrownCattleConsultants #SustainableGrazing #QuietAchievements

🐏 IT’S THE HOW Charlotte Wheeler from our research team on the subject of pasture-fed sheep and grazing management: 🗣 "Grazing is a management tool that can be used to deliver a range of outcomes, regardless of the species. The conversation around the benefits that cattle can deliver has progressed a lot over recent years (e.g. "it's not the cow, it's the how"), and I'd like to see the conversation get to a similar place with sheep. There's still a misconception, even in some regenerative circles, that sheep are inherently detrimental to biodiversity, or can't generate positive outcomes." “As with cattle, it's a case of having the right infrastructure and animal genetics for your system, and managing their impact carefully in line with your goals. It's amazing to see how quickly regenerative grazing with cattle is spreading around the UK and it just goes to show what can happen when farmers share knowledge and experience with each other - we just need to get to the same place with sheep. There are lots of farmers doing amazing work with sheep and I'm glad Pasture for Life is highlighting some of them here" 👇 https://lnkd.in/exWpYSTG (Photo: PfL certified Essebeare Farm, Devon) #pastureforlife #sheep #sheepfarmer #pasture

Did you know that the beautiful bromeliads can unintentionally become #mosquito breeding grounds? These tropical plants collect water between their leaves, creating the perfect habitat for larvae. Here are some tips to keep your bromeliads beautiful and mosquito-free: Regular Inspections: Check for larvae—those small wigglers can be spotted with a flashlight! Weekly Maintenance: Tip potted bromeliads to drain water and empty saucers beneath them.

Roughages are plant-based feedstuffs. Technically, forage and herbage are defined as plant materials available for consumption by an animal. Technically, roughage refers to a feedstuff with a higher fiber content forages. Practically speaking, the terms are used interchangeably. #GeneralAgriculture
