🐝 World Bee Day 🌼 World Bee Day is an annual event celebrated on the 20th of May, the day aims to raise awareness of the importance of bees and other pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development. Here are a few interesting facts about bees: 🐝 Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination. 🐝 One out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators such as bees. 🐝 Honeybees have a dance move called the ‘waggle dance’. This move is actually a clever way that bees communicate between themselves to tell their nestmates where to go to find the best source of food. #pollination #worldbeeday #bees #sustainability #pollinators #trustgreen #rootedinnature

Founder of Azure Road, a digital publication devoted to conscious living. Contributing sustainable lifestyle, travel + wine stories to Decanter, Food & Wine, Forbes, SevenFiftyDaily, Wine Enthusiast.
I love this story on Azure Road. The Artisan: The Cultured Abalone Farm Along the coast of Santa Barbara, Sea Stephanie Fish and The Cultured Abalone Farm take an innovative approach to restoring balance in the ocean’s ecosystem. If you’ve heard about the purple urchin, you may know the recent imbalance in their population growth has been devatstating kelp forests along the California coastline. What to do? How about an edible solution. “The loss of kelp forests is alarming because they constitute essential habitat for California’s coastal biodiversity, and because they provide $100 million dollars of value annually through ecosystem services like carbon sequestration and ocean de-acidification.” https://lnkd.in/eB4yXWUt

Sarah sharing her knowledge on respectfully enjoying nature's bounty. And it's mushroom and (soon) evergreen season! 🧡 "Holding the powerful knowledge of identifying wild plants and picking them for preparing nourishing meals and medicine has tremendous benefits. Not only physically, by being active and eating nutritious wild plants, but more so it enriches us on a deeper emotional and energetic level, bonding us with the natural world from which we originate." "I am adamant that we all carry within us this wisdom, passed down from our ancestors who lived in harmony with the land and survived from its resources. Only in our modern ways of living have we forgotten how to harvest in nature responsibly, sustainably, and safely, in a manner that heals and connects us to nature and our fundamental being. However, by following a few simple guidelines on where, how, and the do’s and don’ts of wild plant harvesting, we can rediscover and bring back the lost practices." #sacrebeans #foraging #sustainability ⤵ read on the beans blog!

𝗕𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🐝 Did you know that bumblebees are expert navigators, making them invaluable partners for maximizing pollination in your greenhouses? These little pollinators use landmarks like plant rows, structures, and even specific blooms to create mental maps, allowing them to locate flowers and return to high-pollen spots with incredible precision. 🌼 By memorizing and learning from their environment, bumblebees enhance their routes over time, improving pollination efficiency and ensuring your vegetable crops get the attention they need. 🍅 Bumblebees promote healthier and higher yields and support a sustainable growing environment. 🌍This Earth Day, we're shining a light on Kenwood Vineyards, where we have a multi-year initiative to protect pollinator sanctuaries which are vital for maintaining natural ecosystems. The team have transformed non-native grasslands into protected habitats, providing essential support for endangered species like the Western Monarch butterfly, as well as native bees, and other crucial pollinators. 🦋 Our vineyards are also home to many permanent honeybee hives and dedicated areas adorned with pollinator-attracting plants such as milkweed and native wildflowers. These efforts not only provide habitats for a variety of pollinator species, but also underscore our dedication to preserving biodiversity and supporting the delicate ecosystems that sustain us. #EarthDay #Sustainability #KenwoodVineyards #PRWLife #Wine

Karibu in our avocado orchard! Did you know we export over 2400 tonnes of avocados per year from our 120 hectares of avocados? 🥑 Our avocado fields are surrounded by eco strips and forests, which is home to so many species of wildlife! The combination of agriculture and nature brings balance to our farm. For example: we have hundreds of different types of pollinators (not just bees!) that help to pollinate the avocado flowers. Antelopes run around and their 💩 attracts hoverflies that help with the pollination, and makes our soils more fertile. We have large flocks of Guineafowl that aerate the soil by going through the compost looking for insects. The trees provide buffers for wind, diseases and water holding capacity. Their roots and leaves make the soil more fertile and resilient. The trees provide climate control, carbon sequestration and habitats for all the animals and insects in the forests surrounding our avocado fields. In total the farm has 150 hectares of undisturbed wild forests. 🌳 💚 Did you see the colobus monkey hopping away at the end of the video? 🐵

New growth! Announcing Community Edible Weed Walks available for commissioning in your local area in WA. (Clarification: the weeds are edible, not the community 🥒) We'd love to visit your neighbourhood and deliver a walk-along experience showing people of any age how to love their local places even more by enhancing their wild plant knowledge. Recognising food plants is a way humans have been connecting with nature, culture and each other since our species began. Get in touch if this sounds like a place-centric social activity your community would find interesting. From a recent weed walker: "Usually, I'm just walking to get my steps in, but now I'm excited to spot edible plants all over the place!" Weed Walks work in all weathers 🌱 🌦 For those with pesky unspent 23/24 budgets, we can get things moving in June for delivery from July to November, depending on local conditions. Here's more about Edible Weed Walks: The arrival of rain means the sprouting of weeds - this can be a cause for celebration if you know what to look for. Exotic edible plant species came to Western Australia with colonisation and immigration, and while they can cause problems in native bushland and agricultural contexts, they also grow fairly harmlessly in a variety of urban landscapes like public parks, empty lots, verges, and our gardens. They're often related to plants we commonly grow or buy for food and medicine, and sometimes these wild varieties are even more nutritious and potent, once you get to know them. You could be walking past a free feed every day! For details, visit the solidaria.com.au services page. https://lnkd.in/gQeeaWiV #urbanforaging #foodisfree #plantknowledge #communitybuilding #placelove #placeintimacy #urbanwalking #lovelocal #heritage

Bees are vital to the health of our crops and wild plants, playing a key role in the very food that sustains our communities. In the fight for food justice, it's essential we protect these pollinators. By planting native flowers, creating organic gardens, and offering nesting spots, we’re not just helping the bees—we're reclaiming our power over the land and the food we grow. Want to learn more about the important role of bees, check out local master beekeeper and kid favorite @rootedfaithfarm 🐝 #SaveTheBees #BeeTheChange
