THOUSANDS OF BRITAIN’S PUBS, RESTAURANTS AND HOTELS HAVE RUN OUT OF CASH RESERVES, LEAVING THEM IN A PERILOUS STATE (www.thetimes.co.uk) Thousands of Britain’s pubs, restaurants and hotels have run out of cash reserves, leaving them in a “perilous state”, according to new research. A joint survey by the hospitality industry’s biggest trade bodies found that a quarter of venues (pubs, community hubs, clubs etc.) had exhausted their cash, making them “extremely vulnerable to the slightest shock”. It warned there was a risk that any such shock could have dire consequences for operators, forcing them to shut their doors for good and depriving communities of a valuable asset. The roll-call of casualties from the pandemic, soaring energy and wages inflation and the cost of living. Thousands of pubs and other venues are said to be at risk because they have very little cash in reserve crisis continue to push businesses to the brink, threatening the existence of thousands more. Between December 2019 and last December, the number of licensed premises fell from 116,203 to 99,113, a net loss of 17,090 venues. 🤔 How to get more UK-grown beans on UK plates is the focus of a new report from 3Keel consultants Katie Jones and Julian Cottee. 🥘 The BeanMeals project focuses on two quick-cooking bean varieties developed for UK growing conditions by the University of Warwick. The Capulet and Godiva beans, as they are known, are suitable for a wide range of easily-prepared institutional and home-cooked meals with lower fat, salt and sugar content. 📊  The report from 3Keel analyses the ‘missing middle’ in the bean value chain – the processing, manufacturing, logistics and trade operations for beans. 🛣  It identifies three pathways to get UK beans from farm to fork with growth potential, outlining the enablers, barriers and outcomes of each pathway.
