It all begins with a seed. 🌱 Every variety you know and love begins with one fundamental process: germination. This essential process is the foundation of hop breeding, allowing breeders to cross different varieties and create unique flavor and aroma profiles. Germination is a crucial process because it enables breeders to unlock a wide range of flavors and aromas, from citrusy and floral to earthy and spicy. By carefully selecting specific traits, breeders can develop hop varieties that bring new dimensions to beer – much like Alora, the newest aroma hop to come out of the Hopsteiner breeding program. Learn more about Alora here - https://lnkd.in/gNDSnW4y Want to know more about the lifecycle of a new hop variety? Follow along – we'll be showing every step!

🌟 #Irene is an orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) variety, brought to life by World Food Prize Foundation winner, Maria Andrade, and introduced by the International Potato Center (CIP) 🍠 🍽 What makes Irene stand out? Its narrow leaves can be eaten as a vegetable 60 days after planting, and its orange-fleshed roots are ready to harvest after 100 days 💧 Irene is also drought tolerant - a crucial trait, particularly in regions prone to extreme weather events that often devastate crops 📈 OFSP like Irene are pro-vitamin A-enriched. Over the past decade, #CIP, with funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation & USAID, has released numerous #OFSP varieties, improving nutrition and livelihoods for millions The regular release of improved sweetpotato varieties is the result of an accelerated breeding scheme that cut the time it takes to develop and release a new variety from 8 to 4 years. Such innovation is essential in crop breeding worldwide, and is now at the heart of #AcceleratedBreedingInitiative work With support from #CIP, farmers in arid areas like #Machakos in #Kenya who adopted #Irene are now harvesting heavily 🎉 Watch a summary of this success story 👇 https://lnkd.in/gWBkAJiS

Potato knowledge:- Did you know the period (days) from the start of the potato tuber initiating to the harvested #potato breaking #dormancy in store is consistent and therefore predictable. The belief that potato dormancy break (start of sprouting) in store is related to crop #desiccation or #harvest date is not supported by applied potato research. Cambridge University Farms research several years ago demonstrated this for a number of varieties over a number of years. Commercial potato #cropmodelling by Crop4Sight expanded the list of varieties that dormancy break could be predicted for. An essential piece of knowledge for the most efficient use of potato sprout suppression products including #Restrain #ethylene. Growers can determine this knowledge for themselves:- 1) For your variety record the date the first tubers start intiaiting. TI is defined as when the tip swells to twice the width of the #stolon ( see picture ). 2) Ensure some tubers do not receive maleic hydrazide in the field or sprout suppression when harvested. 3) Store the larger tubers in the dark at 8C and inspect weekly for the first eye movement. A clear 1-2mm sprout is needed as sometimes on red varieties eyes appear to open but are not actually ready to sprout. Record the date. 4) Now simply calculate the number of days between the TI date and dormancy break. You will find that for your variety this is a pretty good predictor of dormancy break regardless of the different growing season.

🍠 15% more yield than ‘Beauregard’ - when an ornamental beats the standard! On the upper picture you can see our sweet potato variety SugarBeauty(R) ‘Orange Lady’. It’s a new ornamental sweet potato variety which we selected last year. Why? 👉 compact growth 👉 beautiful red-green foliage 👉 great for container cultivation 👉 high yield 👉 awesome orange fleshed tubers This year we compared it to standard varieties on the market. 👉 It easily outperformed other ornamental varieties. 👉 It even outperformed the standard ‘Beauregard’ variety. (See below) Wow! We didn’t expect that! Young plants are available from Lubera Edibles GmbH for next year. P.S: 🤫By the way, other new super high yielding varieties with up to 5 kg/ per plant are coming soon. But that’s a story for a different post.

JUICY ORIGINS: You might think the mandarin, with its bright orange hue, is just another type of orange, but that’s not quite right. In fact, the mandarin is actually one of the ancestors of the orange! 🍊 Oranges are a man-made hybrid, created when the pomelo - a fruit as bitter as a grapefruit - was crossed with the sweet, juicy mandarin. 🍊 Oranges are believed to have been first cultivated in southern China (references to the fruit can be found in the region’s literature as far back as 314 BC). Nowadays, there are hundreds of orange varieties throughout the world. So, next time you enjoy an orange, remember its rich history of plant breeding innovation! 🌱🍊 ➡️ Follow us for more juicy insights into plant breeding. Do you know that the flowers of the Markies variety of potatoes appear in the first month after Planting? The flowers don't open, and they fall off shortly after appearing. #markies If you uproot a plant at this stage you will see small tubers/stolons at the tips of the roots. #potatoproduction. Is tuber bulking similar to all potato varieties? #capacitybiulding #precisionagriculture

Fig season has arrived in Louisiana, and many of the popular varieties around the state have come from a breeding program at the LSU AgCenter. LSU Purple was released by the LSU AgCenter in 1991 and has medium-size, dark purple fruit and good resistance to foliage diseases. Its tendency to produce two crops, a heavy main crop in July and a later crop sometimes lasting into December, makes it popular. LSU Gold, another LSU AgCenter release, became available in 2001. It produces a flavorful yellow fig with light red to pink pulp. The most recent LSU AgCenter fig varieties to be released are O’Rourke, medium-size, light brown fruit; Champagne, medium-size, yellow fruit; and Tiger, large, light brown fruit with a darker brown stripe. These three varieties are excellent but may be harder to find. #LSUAgCenter #Research #Figs
