Setaria italica, commonly known as foxtail millet, serves as an excellent model for C4 photosynthetic crop plants. Despite its advantageous characteristics, there has been limited research on its genomic diversity and potential for genetic enhancement. Using high throughput sequencing, researchers assembled 110 core-set reference-level genomes, enabling the creation of a comprehensive pan-genome and a graph-based genome for Setaria. By conducting large-scale genetic studies across 68 traits in 13 different environments, researchers identified promising genes that could enhance millet cultivation in diverse geographic locations. These discoveries are poised to revolutionize millet breeding through marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, and genome editing, thereby accelerating crop improvement strategies tailored to various climatic conditions. How is the genomic value used in Estimated Breeding Values? Genomics is about relationships. The manner in which genomics is incorporated into industry genetic evaluations, using either the relationship or marker effects approach, is referred to as a ‘single-step’ genetic evaluation, reflecting that genomics data is analysed simultaneously with other sources of information. 🌱 As someone who studied plant breeding and genetics, with a minor in plant pathology, I’ve always been fascinated by beneficial plant-microbe interactions. My graduate studies fueled my conviction that we need to harness these biological powers for the greater good. For too long, this potential has been overlooked in modern plant breeding. I was fortunate to enable forward breeding with native traits in a previous role, and now, I’m thrilled to see advancements in microbiome gene breeding (M gene breeding). 🌾 This innovative approach allows us to engineer beneficial microbial communities that enhance plant health and resilience against pathogens. It’s exciting to witness technology finally catching up to our understanding of the microbiome's role in crop production, paving the way for sustainable agriculture and global food security.
