Airbus is an example how Europe can lead in a high-tech industry while promotes economic growth, jobs and coesion. Before Airbus, Europe was effectively at the forefront of supersonic flight with the Concorde project. resources and capabilities + Moonshot objectives + Get things done

Improved (re-) cycling of plastic wherever possible is at least as important as recycling rocket parts. Both should be part of capitalism to aim for a sustainable future https://lnkd.in/e2H2DR4w

Why is #Airbus soaring while #Boeing seems to be stuck on the tarmac? I put it down to deploying (or not) the right type of creativity for the situation. The "Kirton Adaptation-Innovation continuum" teaches us that we are all creative, but in different ways: we all fall somewhere between adaptation — tweaking what already works — and innovation — pioneering new paths. Adaptors thrive in established settings; innovators challenge the status quo. Boeing used the wrong type of creativity when redesigning the B737. It pushed the existing model to its limits in order to save time and money. When those limits were reached, it patched some software (creatively) on top to make it fly ‘like the old model’. In contrast, when Airbus launched the A320 Neo programme, it went back to the drawing board for many aspects and pushed for innovative solutions. The result is a market share of 65% for Airbus vs. 35% for Boeing for the segment. Was a different course possible for Boeing? Unlikely, given their prior pivot from engineering innovation to fiscal frugality, a shift that had already plagued the 787 Dreamliner programme. The relocation of headquarters, the imposition of uniform processes, and the outsourcing of the supply chain created an environment where only adaptive creativity could be deployed. Airbus, however, also faced turbulence with its initial A350 (a modernised version of an older aircraft, using adaptive thinking). The famous A380 double-decker is an engineering breakthrough but it failed to read the mood of the market and is a commercial failure: innovation doesn’t always pay… So, when should a company adapt, and when should it innovate? I'll reveal more on this next week. #Leadership #Creativity #Breakthrough

Airbus reported higher first-quarter profit and revenue, but results came in below what Wall Street was expecting. It’s still faring better than U.S. rival Boeing. The European aircraft manufacturer reported earnings of €0.76 (81 cents) a share, up 29% from the €0.59 a share in the first quarter of 2023. But that was below the €0.84 a share that analysts were expecting. Revenue rose 9% to €12.8 billion ($13.75 billion) from the year-ago first quarter, but Wall Street was looking for revenue of €13.1 billion. Airbus AIR -2.28% reported results just before noon ET Thursday in the U.S., after the European markets had closed for the day. France-based Airbus is still trouncing its U.S. rival on pure metrics so far this year. Boeing on Wednesday reported a narrower-than-expected loss of $1.13 a share from revenue of $16.6 billion when it posted its results, and shares are down 0.2% in early afternoon trading. “We delivered first quarter 2024 results against the backdrop of an operating environment that shows no sign of improvement,” including continuing geopolitical and supply chain tensions, said Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, in a statement. Airbus maintained its guidance for 2024, assuming no additional disruptions to the world economy, air traffic, supply chain, or other issues. The company is projecting about 800 commercial aircraft deliveries, and adjusted EBIT, or earnings before interest and taxes, of €6.5 billion to €7.0 billion. ... #AirbusEarnings #Aviation #CommercialAircraft $AIR (with Callum Keown)

I believe the appropriate word to use here is - Behemoth The A380 was Airbus’ strategic bet to unseat Boeing’s decades long dominance of large aircraft. It took first commercial flight in 2007 to much fanfare and expectations. There is nothing quite like in the skies (commercial planes that is) and was a feat of engineering. Riding in the A380 is quite the experience. It is comfortable and delivers a sense of occasion. However, market forces and development made this super-jumbo very costly to fly. Newer more efficient planes also came to market. COVID was probably the tipping point to seal the fate of this behemoth. Expectedly, the post-COVID spike in travel demand and the challenges that ails its rival Boeing saw the de-mothball of many A380s as they retake the skies. ✈️ We often encounter similar situations in business. Long term strategies fought by market or macro developments and opportunities to gain or regain market share as competitors falter. Some of the few ways to protect against unforeseen circumstances would be to stay nimble, diversify and be ready to capture opportunities. They are also ways to be ready to sail that second-wind. Of course, business cannot depend on such strokes of luck, active strategic planning and execution is still necessary. ✈️ With this machine’s uncertain future, I will enjoy flying in it while it still operates. Probably the best option for a 14hr ride.
