On 28 October we commemorate Te Pūtake o te Riri, He Rā Maumahara, our National Day of Remembrance of the New Zealand Wars.    The New Zealand Wars took place in the 1840s-1870s when Colonial and Māori forces clashed over issues such as land disputes, loss of Māori autonomy and self-determination, and disagreements over the interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi / Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  Remembrance allows us to reflect on both our individual and collective histories. Learning from the past empowers us to understand the complexities of our shared journey, enabling us to draw valuable lessons that inform our actions moving forward and chart a brighter future.
