Protecting our nation’s public lands is a collective effort. Stewarding these treasured spaces depends on collaborations between federal, state, and local governments, nonprofits, corporations, volunteer organizations, schools, and individual citizens and visitors. Research has shown that these efforts are well worth our time and energy. Outdoor recreation has extensive mental and physical health benefits, from decreased anxiety and depression to improved heart and joint health and beyond. The power of unplugging and immersing yourself in nature truly can’t be overstated. For these reasons and more, national parks – our country’s most popular public lands – continue to see an increase in visitor rates year over year. While this is great for the parks and the people, these growing crowds mean it’s more vital than ever that visitors have access to up-to-date information and alternative options prior to their adventures. Seeing this trend towards potential overuse on popular trail systems, AllTrails took responsibility to help mitigate issues, creating a culture of trail stewardship for generations to come. From this sense of responsibility came the AllTrails Public Lands Program, a free resource for agencies and non-profit organizations that helps better inform visitors and improve the experience of both visitors and trail managers. Time has come to put words into action. Tomorrow I'm doing my walk for The Wilderness Society Australia. The #fundraising challenge entails doing 50km. While I could have done this in different stages, I choose to do it on one go. I've already done training trails of 50km by now. But for me the challenge is about doing something new. To say I'm excited and terrified is an understatement. I few things I reflect on before starting: 🚶♀️ Walking is nature will be the boost that will keep me going. I'll pass White Swan Reservoir for a dip to keep cool and refresh on the way from Creswick to Ballarat and back. Important to prioritise having fun as well 🚶♂️ Doing something new helps the brain cope with change and stress. Being at the beginning of my career, I look for every opportunity to learn and no better way to do than throw myself at the unknown. Testing the limits and making sure they never stay fix for long is what I strive for 🚶♂️ Depending on myself. It's probably the most challenging part. While resilient in many ways, I have yet to feel completely safe in situations I know little about. Trusting my body will carry me is what's at stake here too. The mind will also be a thorn at time, I'm sure 🚶♂️ I deeply believe in the cause. Nature is the source of knowledge. There is nothing we can't learn when we observe nature. The laws, the interactions, the relationships, the trade-off, the adaptability to change and the myriad of creatures yet to be discovered. For the infinite wisdom of Mother Nature, I hope to draw even if a small speck of knowledge and apply that to the way I carry myself through this world 🚶♂️ My post-care treatment will involve a foot massage while sipping a ginger tonic. The feedback from my fall experiment of offering free habitat workshops was so positive I’ve decided to host seasonal habitat workshops this year to share actionable ways to create a more ecologically sustainably landscape - with the focus on the function of our yards as a wildlife habitat. The size of the workshops is intentionally limited to make them more interactive and encourage authentic connections. I’ve worked hard to offer hands-on and practical ideas geared towards anyone who is at the beginning of the process of restoring habitat where they live. I’m maintaining the low-key nature of the workshops by reaching out through my networks to folks who are open to making their yards more wildlife friendly. Feel free to share this information with anyone who you think "gets it" and might benefit. The Winter Habitat Yard Workshop is on Sunday, February 25 from 12:00-2:00pm. Having a vision is the crucial start for a plan. -Manchester filled with green corridors. -Buildings in Darlington covered in living roofs and walls. -A dawn chorus on the streets of Birmingham.. Its exciting times. All of these are starting to happen around the world. But, all to often it’s at showpiece sites in capital cities, like Singapore and Copenhagen. How about our regional centres and provincial towns? Norwich counts to. -Carbon free Public transport. -Local residents cycling, walking and on buses, enjoying clean fresh air. -Streets filled with the cooling presence of Trees. Having a vision for the future is the first step in achieving something amazing. We can all play our part. People Power. So why don't you start conversations with your neighbours and local businesses. Create a vision for your local area. -Start connecting with wildlife. Donate or become a member of your local wildlife trust. -Find out who manages the local park. Write down ALL your ideas for it and assume NOTHING is impossible. -Read a Robert McFarlane book. Be inspired. Get local residents and colleagues to see the magic we get, for free, from the species we share then planet with.
