Trade ins are GOLD. I DO NOT care about macro negative equity conditions. In fact, at the end of any decent TO where there is nowhere left to go in the deal, the floor closer should be asking the customer to trade ANY vehicle in the household. If you pull a trade into a deal, (even if it is not present at time of sale) you have: 1. Higher likelihood of selling the car 2.Higher likelihood of profit regardless of the negative equity 3. Better used car inventory
Trade-ins are truly the crown jewels of dealerships: 1. Unique & scarce vehicles. 2. Allow dealers to sell 2 cars instead of 1. 3. More profitable sales–Gross profit on a deal with a trade-in is at least $600 higher than one without a trade-in (on average). But here’s what’s unique about it: the added profit doesn’t come at the expense of consumers. Rather, dealers save on wholesale auction fees and transportation costs… And that is why I believe it's the best example of a “win-win” scenario for dealers and consumers in the car biz.
