It's that time of year when it gets hot and typically rains less, causing lawns to dry out. There are a few things you can do to help your lawn stay as green as possible during dryer periods. There is no substitute for water your lawn, if you decide to. Deep watering is best to promote deep root growth. . Summer Tips to Minimize Dry Lawns: 1) Cut your grass much higher than you would in the Spring. Longer grass grows longer roots and will reach moisture deeper in the soil. Long grass also provides more shade to the soil, minimizing evaporation. . 2) This tip is for future dry spells: Aeration is best done in the Spring or Fall, but aeration helps grass roots grow deeper where more water remains in the soil. The surface of the soil dries out first, making deeper lawn roots more drought resistant. . 3) Plant trees to provide some shade on the lawn. .
