Day of Seafarers is annually commemorated every 25th of June by the maritime community, to recognise the contribution that seafarers make to our everyday lives. The role of seafarers often goes underappreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use every day. They are professionals who operate and maintain cargo vessels and other types of ships. They are generally responsible for the safety and security of their shipmates and the cargo they have on board. They also manage all aspects of a ship's maintenance and repairs, which can be anything from minor fixes to major overhauls. Due to the nature of their work, seafarers are often away from home for long period, and have unfortunately been subjected to poor labour treatment and training. The Day of the Seafarer was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Convention (STCW Convention). Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole. The resolution "encourages government, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully". #IMO #seafarers #maritime

The key factors for shipboard safety is open communication between the crew. Mike Morales, president of the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy, maintained that seafarers, regardless of rank, should be able to speak when something goes or is about to go wrong with shipboard operations. It was revealed, however, that the Filipinos' slant toward conformity, reticence, and the traditional respect and submission to elders and those in higher positions weigh in the communication dynamics onboard ships. This is bolstered by the fact that major maritime schools in the country implement a quasi-military education that trains cadets to submit to authority with blind obedience. In this regard, various industry leaders comment on whether the country's regimental form of maritime education needs tweaking for some of its premier maritime institutions.
