The link between housing instability and mental health is undeniable - homelessness is often a result of mental illness and a cause of it. Anxiety, depression, and trauma are common consequences of homelessness and precarious living conditions. For individuals already managing mental health issues, stable housing is crucial for recovery and accessing essential healthcare. We believe that everyone deserves a place to call home that is affordable, sustainable, safe and secure. This article written by Hanna Ridd RN, BSN explores how preserving affordable housing is crucial in preventing homelessness and breaking the cycle of mental illness that often follows housing instability. When individuals and families lose their homes, it creates a ripple effect that impacts mental health, job security, and even access to essential services. By keeping housing affordable and accessible, we are making a direct impact on mental health and reducing homelessness in Utah. Mental illness, substance abuse, and homelessness are all crises that must be solved. If we are to solve them, we must understand clearly how they intersect, how they are distinct, and the specific solutions that each demands. The stereotype that people experiencing homelessness have lost housing due to mental illness or substance abuse has misinformed many policies and system-level solutions needed to adequately address mental illness, substance abuse, and homelessness. As many people experiencing homelessness have neither a mental illness nor substance use disorder, policy responses that emphasize treatment for these conditions are not effective in serving this large segment of the population experiencing homelessness. #HomelessnessIsSolvable Learn more:

Manager Client Services at Catherine House / Accredited Social Worker / Advocate for Women / I write with simple language, using images to share and amplify issues I care about. Views expressed are my own.
With world homelessness and mental health day just passed, the connection between them, is not lost on workers and agencies on the front line, like Catherine House Inc. This week like many, has been really tough on a number of clients and the staff supporting them. The relapses were not their first and won’t be the last. Each time tenancies are put at risk, safety compromised, relationships affected, emergency services called and despite support, the client may have little insight into their unwellness or the impact on themselves or others. They decline support, disengage, become isolated and are not able to see anything is wrong. This is the illness. While this is very scary for client, it is also very taxing on workers and the team leaders supporting them. The sector could be better supported by greater access to community mental health clinicians, with teams embedded in every homelessness and housing service, a more resourced and timely emergency service response and rapid rehousing with appropriate support. We know that homelessness if chronic and enduring, or even episodic can lead to mental health conditions. Mental health conditions not treated can lead to homelessness. We are pleased clients in our service have access to skilled hardworking dedicated staff who go above and beyond to support women in our service. They show up positively, 365 days a year ready to support clients and their colleagues, as they are teams working together towards a shared vision and mission. #catherinehousesupport #supportingwomen #supportingrecovery #supportingmentalwellness

Statistics show that homeless children are more likely to develop various physical and mental health-related problems. These in turn have an impact on their likelihood of lacking access to education, accompanied by greater exposure to trauma and instability during their upbringing. However, all of these issues are preventable by addressing the root causes of the problem. #solvetherootproblem #mentalhealthawareness #housingcrisis #housinghumans #holisticsolutions #mentalhealth #homelessness https://ow.ly/UkBs50Ru3ij

At SACH we support clients who are vulnerable due to housing, mental health and addictions. Surrey's last homelessness count showed a 65% increase, however, the report notes that when and how the count happens is not fulsome. “It is important to understand that this methodology will create a result that is an absolute minimum number of people who are experiencing homelessness on the specific day of the count, and this methodology means that those who are not currently accessing services or are easily found will most likely be excluded.” Here is where SACH steps in - we take information to the clients and then support them to navigate their way through the system to get the support they need. We know we are only reaching the tip of the iceberg to support those most in need and we want to do more to help. https://lnkd.in/gxS9ZrGt

This 'new' plan isn't going to work either. I have a better one. Do away with the buzz words and garbage three letter acronyms. Identify the real root causes. Mental health issues, addiction, and severe lack of life-skills are some examples. We also need to be honest about WHO makes up the homeless population and respond accordingly. Then, rather than worrying about hurting someone's feelings, figure out the best way to provide real help. Housing people for the sake of housing them doesn't solve anything for anyone anymore than 'safe injection sites and supply' do. It's like wrapping up a wound and expecting the infection within to heal itself. The people living on the streets are wounded. Bandaid solutions, which is what housing first et al is, don't help. The evidence shows this overwhelmingly and how it isn't obvious to everyone involved reveals a bigger problem. https://lnkd.in/ezuSiPQC

"Homelessness Can Take a Toll on Your Mental Health: Understanding the Impact and Providing Support" Homelessness is not just a lack of shelter; it's a profound crisis that can have devastating effects on mental health. At Sheltered Hope Initiative, we witness firsthand the toll it takes on individuals facing homelessness. The constant uncertainty, fear, and stress of not having a stable place to live can lead to serious mental health challenges. Feelings of isolation and hopelessness are common among those experiencing homelessness. The stigma attached to homelessness can further exacerbate these feelings, making individuals less likely to seek help for their mental health issues. Moreover, the cycle of homelessness can be difficult to break without proper support. Many individuals experiencing homelessness also struggle with substance abuse issues, which can worsen mental health problems and create additional barriers to finding stable housing. At Sheltered Hope Initiative, we believe in a holistic approach to addressing homelessness, one that includes mental health support as a core component. By providing access to counseling, therapy, and support groups, we aim to help individuals rebuild their lives and regain their sense of dignity and self-worth during our CSP Test Phase implementation process. We will also be advocating for policies that address the root causes of homelessness, such as lack of affordable housing and mental health services. By working together as a community, we can make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness and ensure that everyone has a safe place to call home. Your contribution would make a faster impact. Partner/support today! #homelessnesscrisis #mentalheath #stablehousing #sheltersolution #impactsupport #partnershipopportunity

America’s #homelessness crisis is a complex issue, but current strategies often miss the mark by not addressing root causes. As The Cicero Institute points out, housing-first models alone fail to tackle underlying challenges like mental health and substance abuse. At The Other Side Village, we believe in a human-first approach—supporting the whole person through #community, #dignity, and #empowerment. By focusing on holistic whole-person change, we're transforming lives and creating sustainable paths out of homelessness.
