A Big LinkedIn Job Search Mistake    Setting up your LinkedIn for your jobs is critical, but I’ve noticed a common mistake among many job seekers. One of the mistakes is that many people don't use the "open to work" banner or the "open to work" functionality. It is important to show that green banner as it’s very eye catching to recruiters, hiring managers, and it also attracts the help and the attention of the whole community because everybody rallies around job seekers. Also, check to make sure that you’re using the "open to work" settings thoroughly. Go through all the different settings that are a part of the "open to work" workflow in your profile as well.     Another common mistake is many people only select one or maybe two different jobs when you can select up to five. You should select up to five jobs because that helps the job search engine find you for different roles. #3 of 10 reasons why many people fail in their JOB SEARCH…   They don’t have a substantial TARGET COMPANY LIST… 👇   When companies launch new products into the marketplace, they define exactly who the audience is that they’re trying to reach... and the same is true for job seekers.   What companies are you trying to reach? By industry... or by product type... or by geographic location... or any combination of these.   Without a target company list, your job search doesn’t have the focus it needs. And all too often, I see a lot of job seekers who don’t take the time to go through this process.   So, here are a few suggestions: ✔ List out all of the industries where you bring experience and/or knowledge. ✔ Then create a list of the companies that fall under each of those industries (LinkedIn filtered searches are a great resource for this). This is important because the easiest way for hiring companies to eliminate you is if you don’t already have a good understanding of their industry. They are happy to train you on their products and services but if they can avoid having to train you on the industry, you clearly have an advantage over candidates that don’t have that experience. This is your path of least resistance.   ✔ With this list of not less than 30 companies in hand, you can then go into LinkedIn and perform filtered searches to find the 3, 4 or 5 key people inside each firm that you want to contact either through a networking connection or directly yourself if you have no networking avenue. However, this convenience comes with high competition. Since these platforms are accessible to a large number of job seekers, standing out among a flood of applications can be challenging. 2. Company Websites: A Direct Path Applying through a company’s website shows that you’re specifically interested in that organization. It often puts your resume directly in the hands of internal recruiters rather than a third-party system. This approach can make you stand out as a more serious candidate. However, it requires more time and effort—researching companies, finding their career pages, and tailoring your application to each role. But this extra effort can pay off if you’re targeting specific industries or organizations. 3. Which is More Effective? It depends on your strategy. Job boards are great for casting a wide net, especially for general job searches.
