George is a top used truck sales rep and has been since he started here nine years ago. He’s been in the business for almost 40 years, driving for 10 and then selling for the past 27. He credits a friend of his father’s, Wally Ropel, for being his mentor and helping him break into sales. George is paying it forward and offers advice to the people he’s helped bring into the truck sales business, saying “be patient and plant seeds, eventually the seeds will sprout and need to be harvested.” He also rightfully points out that sales is a marathon and not a sprint. Many of George’s clients have become friends and repeat customers. In his spare time, George loves to be with his family. He also golfs, and his favorite hobby is snowmobiling. Chapter 3 After finishing the foundations program, I did a 180 and went into vehicle sales. I took a 1 week sales course and found a dealership who took a chance on a “green” sales person. One of the salesmen named Henry Lee was my “work dad” and mentor. I remember one talk he gave me… “Coralee, see the young, female, Business Manager? She used to be a Sales Person just like you. Now, she is sleeping with the General Manager and got a new job.” There was no further explanation or lesson but from his tone I took it as a warning to be careful, not as a way to “get ahead”. On a different note… I became a sales person to the First Nations in the community since I took the extra time to deliver their vehicles to their land. While I enjoyed helping customer find vehicles to fit their needs and budgets, it was a porridge is “too hot” scenario. I was not a fan or dressing up and wanted to talk with them about the long term maintenance of their vehicle which is not people’s first thought when purchasing a vehicle. There’s one thing Car Sales taught me that I will always be grateful for… Being able to take rejection, criticism (or dogs abuse 😅), failure and set-backs but keep putting one foot in front of the other. You’re a Winner! Recently I watched a documentary on a Major league baseball teams training camp. What are they doing at this camp? They are instilling a winning mentality with these players. The players are being told, 1. “If you strike out you will get on the next time. Don’t give up!” 2. “If we are down a run or two, we can come back and win. Don’t give up!” 3. “If we lose a game we will come back and win the next game. Don’t give up!” The same is true in car sales & in the Finance office. Sometimes we don’t sell a car, catch every customer or hit a homerun. How will you respond? That’s when maintaining composure comes into play. If the innings not over the games not over. We stay in the game and rally. You’re a winner! What can help increase your closing ratio in Car Sales and in the F&I office? In car sales here is a few things that need to happen: 1. Make sure you are doing a proper meet and greet. First impressions matter. 2. Make sure to utilize your managers to help you close the customers. These managers have sold hundreds of vehicles. They will help you win. Is your Finance Manager in a slump? 3.How about having the salesperson sit in the F& I office when you do the paperwork with the customers. Why? This will insure you offer a 100% of the products a 100% of the time. As F&I people we sometimes get tired of saying the same sales tracks over and over. Remember these customers have not heard this sales pitch in 3- 4 years on average or perhaps ever. Stay the course you are a winner! 4. Set goals. Look at each customer as one of your bills being paid. Example: 1. First deal sold pays your grocery bill. 2. Second your utilities. 3. Third fourth and fifth you’re housing.
