Sir Kier Starmer has been criticised for accepting donations to cover the costs of his and Lady Starmer’s clothes.  This morning on Laura Kuenssberg, David Lammy said: “I’ve just come back from the United States, where US presidents and first ladies have a huge budget paid for by the taxpayer so that they look their best on behalf of the US people. We don’t have that system over here. Putting politics aside, I would ask, "Do you look your best on behalf of your company or organisation?” In this post-COVID world, dress standards have fallen, and people are not making the effort to look and feel their best. It's important to remember that our attire plays a significant role in making a good impression. I am not advocating that men wear a three-piece pinstripe suit (this would be great for my business!). Every day, I receive numerous requests from people wanting to connect with me. Apart from checking their company, I look at their photo. If it is a man just wearing a t-shirt, is he that serious about projecting a professional image for his company? On the other hand, someone wearing at least a tailored jacket shows that they look businesslike and inspire confidence. George Floyd should be alive today, but instead, today marks the 4th anniversary of his death. 4 years ago, many of us were in "social media warrior" mode, posting about the tragedy of his death (as we had done for countless other Black men and women who came before him), but it galvanized many of us who might have stopped at "performative social media activism" to move to more action - whether that was protesting in our communities, organizing, donating, calling on our employers to take action, or speaking with our representatives in Congress. In the months that followed, we saw people become more aware and educated around systemic racism and corporations make stronger commitments to DEI. We saw communities make commitments to police reform - things like the use of body cams, diversity training, banning some of the most dangerous practices, etc. But have those commitments been enforced? Not really. Did the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act pass Congress? No (it passed in the House, but stalled in the Senate). And has progress been made in terms of addressing the actual systems of inequity? No (in fact, we've rolled back practices like affirmative action that are designed to combat systemic inequity). In 2019, the year before George Floyd's death, 1004 people were killed by police, and 23% of those people were Black (despite Black people making up just 13% of the population in the US). Every year since, we have seen an INCREASE in the total number of people killed by police. In 2023, that number was 1247 lives lost, and 27% of those lives were Black. George Floyd's family continues to advocate to keep his memory alive and to drive systemic change so that other families don't go through what they have gone through. So what can we do from the small spaces each of us occupies? -We can continue to educate ourselves and stay informed. -We can amplify and donate to organizations that are advocating for change. -We can vote for politicians that support policies that address systemic inequity. -We can use our dollars to support and invest in Black-owned businesses.
