🌍 Hiring Developers from Global Markets: Lessons Learned I’ve had a lot of experience hiring developers from countries like India, Pakistan and beyond. On the surface, the cost savings are clear—typically around three times cheaper than local hires. However, I’ve learned that these savings often come with hidden costs in terms of time. Deadlines can take twice as long to meet due to challenges like internet outages, power issues, unexpected holidays, or personal reasons. In some cases, developers even re-hire others from African countries, which can complicate the workflow. One important lesson I've learned is that I used to wait too long before realizing a developer wasn’t meeting expectations. I’d give them more time, hoping they’d overcome their issues and deliver. Unfortunately, this often led to further delays and missed deadlines. Now, I know the importance of addressing performance issues early, rather than waiting and hoping things will improve. That said, there’s tremendous talent in these markets. When you find the right people—reliable, dedicated, and skilled—their value far outweighs the challenges. We’ve been lucky to have a few outstanding developers from these regions who have truly made a positive impact on our team. The takeaway? To be cautious, not just when hiring from global or different cultural markets, but also locally. We often make the same mistake with our local teams, waiting too long and allowing delays, which wastes time and money. The key is to react quicker and make changes faster when performance isn’t meeting expectations. It’s so typical for companies to start in their home market before expanding outwards. Well, we didn’t do that. ❓Why do companies start in their home market? ✅ Convenience ✅ Existing networks ✅ Familiarity We did that too, for a few months. The first users who gave me feedback on Taita were from Northern Europe — it was easy to get in touch. Because of “convenience, networks, familiarity.” Yet we quickly found that sourcing vs screening balance differs by country. In smaller countries like Estonia, the biggest challenge HRs face is FINDING a candidate. Especially, when it comes to more technical roles, it is unreasonable to expect that a Java developer with 5+ years of experience would simply apply for your position unless you are one of the most famous companies. You gotta head hunt. Yet that’s not what we do (yet?) at Taita. Our biggest value is finding the gold nugget among hundreds of applicants. Where does this happen the most? In employer-dominant markets. Thus, we started with India. There, even a new company easily gets 150+ applicants within a week. 👆So, sometimes, we have to sacrifice convenience, networks, and familiarity in pursuit of an opportunity to make something better. Luckily, I had the pleasure of living in Hyderabad for a bit last year — we didn’t start completely from scratch.
