Now that the second-ever Roundnet (aka Spikeball) World Championship is over, I can’t help but think back to the first-ever World Championship where I represented Japan. When I left Belgium for Japan, a big change for me personally was that I could no longer play volleyball with my team. Of course, you can play volleyball in Japan as well, but if you've spent years building camaraderie and a ride-or-die team, that's not something easily replaced—if at all. So, when I arrived, I wanted to rebuild a community centered around sports. That’s when I started Roundnet Japan. No one was playing this fairly new sport in Japan yet. You can play it anywhere, and all you need is three friends, a net, and a ball. Every Saturday, we played in Yoyogi Park, rain or shine, and soon we had a dedicated group of players who understood that this was a new sport, not just a yard game. This led me to start organizing tournaments. Thanks to my good friend Frederick Eskens, I had already experienced the fun and excitement of playing in Roundnet tournaments. The first tournament in Japan attracted around 20 people, but I kept playing, training new people, and organizing more tournaments. Eventually, we had 100 people participating in tournaments that took place every 2-3 months. Then, in a culmination of all our efforts, our community of Roundnet players set out for the first World Championship in 2022. Sixteen Japanese players traveled to Belgium to compete. It was amazing to see how over 30 different countries from all five continents were represented, truly showcasing the power of community. Since then, I’ve stepped away from organizing to focus on InnoHyve and bring my passion for community building to the tech scene. I am extremely proud to see that the Japan team is still going strong and sent a full team again! After a year-long hiatus, I’m itching to get back out there! If anyone is interested in learning a new sport, send me a message—I’d be happy to dust of my set and get out there! #Community #Sports

This week marks Sports Challenge's 24th year and I was fortunate to spend most of the day there yesterday. Over the course of this week, nearly 50 student athletes (SAs) will spend 50 hours investing in themselves -- learning how to apply the same rigor of becoming a better athlete to becoming a better leader. Sports Challenge is a unique and high impact #leadershipdevelopment program. Watching the program in action is impressive and energizing...witnessing something complex in design come to life and look easy is anything but easy! Below are the key elements: - Curriculum: Mentoring, leadership and sports psychology classes and sport practices are aligned and integrated. Putting theory into practice - what does it look like to be a leader on and off the field/court? - Structure: Most sport camps are sport specific and skills based. At Sports Challenges, yes, there are sport training sessions that are sport specific. However, that's not the case for classes, workshops and speed/strength/agility sessions. Learning alongside SAs from other sports deepens learning while expanding social networks and building community. - Culture, Coaches and Staff: Culture is everything. It creates the environment where learning and development happens. Preparation is essential to creating culture. At Sports Challenge, coaches and staff are the culture keepers. They spend four days in staff training for a five day program. Coaches are responsible for facilitating sports practices, teaching leadership and sports psychology classes, serving as mentors and leading leadership forums. The majority of coaches and staff return for multiple years. I know there are so many Sports Challenge coach/staff alumni and student-athlete alumni out there. What did I miss? Please add in comments! If you're new to Sports Challenge and want to learn more, let me know! #youthsports
Starting off strong on Day 1 of Sports Challenge! The energy, teamwork, and fun are already top-notch and we can't wait to see what the rest of the week has in store! Stay tuned for more exciting updates! #SportsChallenge2024 #teamwork #youthsports #youthleadershipdevelopment #HowULeadMatter

[Played for National Team Japan, Won East Asia Championship, Supported local town in Japan] This October brought a profound sense of accomplishment and community spirit to Hiroo, Hokkaido, as we celebrated Japan’s victorious 24-14 win over Hong Kong in an intense rugby league match. This was not just a game; it was a landmark event that tested my limits and brought together a town ready for revitalization. Personal Journey and Triumphs: Returning to Japan from Kenya only a month prior to the match, I found myself navigating a whirlwind of mental and physical challenges. The rigorous daily training, disciplined diet, and strategic rest played crucial roles in not only preparing me for the game but also in overcoming a severe mental burnout from earlier this year. Each moment spent on the field reflected a step towards personal healing and resilience. Impact on Hiroo: Hiroo, though small with its 5,000 residents, faced demographic challenges with a low birthrate and an aging population. This event was more than a match; it was a catalyst for economic and social revitalization. The community’s enthusiastic involvement provided both teams with exceptional support—from meals and accommodations to the warm, welcoming atmosphere they are known for. This engagement injected vitality and joy back into Hiroo, showcasing the untapped potential of minor sports to invigorate communities. The perfect synergy of minor sport and local community: Rugby league, while major in regions like the UK and Australia, still seeks greater recognition and support in Japan. The financial and logistical challenges of nurturing such a sport are significant, from securing funding for travel and sustenance to gaining the necessary exposure. However, Hiroo’s commitment during this event has proven the mutual benefits achievable when communities and sports unite. We are continually looking to expand rugby league’s reach and impact, and we welcome any partners or sponsors who are eager to join Japan Rugby League in this journey. Interested in making a difference? Let’s connect!
