Called the wrong person last week, but what happened made my day. I was dialing away on my afternoon call block (4pm-5pm) and as all salespeople know, phone information is never 100% accurate, no matter what tool you use. A woman picked up and after my opening intro she gave me the opportunity to pitch. She sounded so confused. I mentioned the company name that I thought she worked for and turns out this was a woman with the same name as my prospect 🤣 Instead of getting mad that someone called her at 4:30pm on a Friday, she started CRACKING up and told me that I made her day and we had a 2 minute longer conversation about how funny this was. Can you believe that? Moral of the story - It's ok to mess up. You might make someone's day (or end up blocked....) When doing discovery on inbound leads, imagine that they’re your shopaholic friend. What would that conversation look like? Well one thing’s for sure: You’re not gonna support them. Instead you’ll try talking them out of buying another thing they don’t really need. Notice how the questions you ask during discovery change for the better: ❌ talking about requirements ✅ asking about pain ❌ talking about the product and features ✅ asking about the Cost of Inaction ❌ pitching how your product fits their use cases like a glove ✅ challenging them if your product is really the right solution for them This is called unselling. Funny thing about doing discovery this way is buyers will convince themselves in the process that they’re in the right place. You will have reassured them that they made the right choice in talking to you and will trust you because you weren’t acting salesy on the call. You leave them better off than if they researched their options on their own. That’s how you become better than 80% of sellers today. #discovery #techsales #buyerenablement
