In celebration of Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week, we want to say thank you to all our volunteers for your efforts in supporting our community. Our Civil Defence Volunteers are just a few of the hundreds of volunteers who do amazing work in our community. In Selwyn, we have over 240 Civil Defence community volunteers split across 30 teams, an Emergency Support Team of 26 volunteers and a Response Team (NZRT21) of 35 volunteers. We talked to four volunteers about why they love what they do.

Do you know how to prepare a magic potion? ✨ Our brave warriors do know how! 🔥 To do this, our team of volunteers prepares the ingredients and sends them to the front line. And then, adding only water to our secret ingredients, the guys conjure in their dugouts 🥘 This magic potion is called... Ukrainian borsch! It gives them magic powers to fight the enemy 💪🏻 BORSCH FOR THE BRAVE - another ongoing activity by our volunteers. 🥣 Borsch - a famous Ukrainian dish, that belongs to the intangible UNESCO world heritage. It got a new meaning with the beginning of the war. Numerous teams of volunteers prepare it in various ways to send to the front line. Here we prepare dried borsch, which is then easily cooked in field conditions only by adding boiling water. It's an ongoing process in which many citizens of the community take part. We agree on which ingredients each of us is responsible for, and then bring it all to Antonina Kozurak, our local team leader, who later sends it for packing. 🥔🧅🍅🥬🍠🥕 Potatoes, carrots, beetroots, cabbage, onions, greens are grated/chopped then dried in an oven; meat (not fatty) is first boiled then minced and dried too. Afterwards the ingredients are mixed together in certain proportion and packed. But the main ingredient is our love and care for our brave defenders, and our best wishes of safety to them 🩵💛 Below you can see our borsch being prepared by the soldiers in frontline conditions. It has a special taste there: the taste of another day withstood, another breath of air taken, the taste of hope for another bowl of such a borsch tomorrow or hopefully in a week too with all of your brothers-in-arms safe, alive and around, it has the taste of home and the love of your family ❤️ To help us continue sending the ingredients of the magic potion and give strength to the guys at the forefrontline, please use the details in the comments below. #support_ukraine #military #aid #volunteers #donations #supplies #provisions #meals #food #delivery #LinkedIn #network #connections #army #help

One thing we're doing before summer ends... - Buy a bushel of peaches and make my grandma's beach cobbler - Make a pilgrimage and savor every bite of beach treat. - Host a 'Bye Bye Summer' backyard party with all the friends, neighbors, and festive outfits. - Shop and donate school supplies as a family. - Have a YES day, where we let the kids choose the day's activities...Do at your own risk. - Create a summer scrap book with photos to flip through for years to come. - Take a mystery road trip, parents pick the place and kids get to enjoy the surprise. What traditions do you have or want to try this month? FIVE WAYS TO COMMEMORATE MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day is viewed as the official beginning of summer, marked by picnics and BBQs with friends and family. But this holiday was established to set aside time to honor and remember those who died while serving in the U.S. military. In addition to picnics and BBQs, here are five great ways to commemorate Memorial Day this weekend. 1. Attend A Ceremony. Many towns have parades and ceremonies on Memorial Day. Some even conclude with a memorial service. Make time to take advantage of what your town offers. 2. Decorate with Flags. For many years, it has been a tradition to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flags on Memorial Day or fly our flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. If you have a flag pole, consider joining the tradition this year. 3. Thank A Veteran. While Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring our fallen soldiers, it’s also a wonderful time to thank soldiers past and present who are in our midst today. Thank them for their service. If you do not know a veteran or want to do more, write a letter to a veteran or soldier! Check out https://buff.ly/2DhxLZD for more information about writing letters or sending care packages to soldiers currently deployed. 4. Participate in our National Moment of Remembrance. To ensure Memorial Day is the sacred and noble holiday it is intended to be, the National Moment of Remembrance asks us to pause for 1 minute in national unity wherever we are at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day. 5. Buy A Poppy. During the days leading up to Memorial Day, members of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) accept donations for poppies. The poppy’s significance to Memorial Day derives from John McCrae’s poem, “In Flanders Fields.” Disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals have been assembling Buddy Poppies since 1924. When you purchase a poppy, your donation assists in maintaining state and national rehabilitation and service programs for veterans. #EllenMorano #MemorialDay2024 #Honor #Remembrance #Veterans #FallenSoldiers #ThankYou

Here’s a good way you can help.
In Valdosta, Georgia, where the winds of Helene sent towering pine trees crashing into homes and lawns, our army of volunteers is bringing hope In Jesus' Name. If you would like to be boots on the ground in Helene's path we encourage you to consider serving with our Valdosta team! We praise God that he has provided an abundance of incredible volunteers at our western N.C. response sites. However, we are still in need of day volunteers at all sites and overnight volunteers in Georgia and Florida! Visit https://bit.ly/3zFGCU3 to learn more about serving in Valdosta!

🎖️ Happy National Airborne Day! 🎖️ Today, we honor the brave paratroopers who exemplify the very essence of leadership, teamwork, and resilience. As a retired U.S. Army warrant officer and airborne paratrooper, I’ve carried the lessons learned from the skies into every step of my civilian career: • Leadership Under Pressure: Making critical decisions in high-stress environments is second nature—whether in the boardroom or on the battlefield. • Teamwork and Trust: Just like in the drop zone, success in business hinges on trust and collaboration. • Adaptability: The ability to adjust quickly to changing situations has been key in navigating the ever-evolving corporate landscape. • Discipline and Commitment: The discipline honed during rigorous training translates into consistent execution and a relentless pursuit of excellence. • Risk Management: Assessing and managing risk with precision is something I do every day, thanks to my airborne background. • Resilience: Mental toughness and the ability to bounce back from setbacks are crucial both in service and in business. On this special day, I salute all the paratroopers out there—past, present, and future. Your courage and dedication continue to inspire! #NationalAirborneDay #Leadership #Teamwork #Resilience #Veteran #ArmyStrong #CorporateLife #WarrantOfficer
It's #NationalAirborneDay! 🪂️ Make sure to thank a paratrooper today! We are grateful for each service member defending our country. 📸: DVIDS

I know LinkedIn is very corporate-focused, and a great place to learn and grow as an employee or employer. However, there are huge benefits in both of those areas in volunteering. Yes, I mean volunteering, not 'voluntolding' in the workplace!! I do a few things around the place, but one of the ones that brings me the most joy is my work with the Australian Fromelles Association. It's a role that unites two of my great loves, Australian military history (especially World War 1), and genealogy research. For years we've been gradually chipping away at identifying all of the unknown soldiers found (through the work of a Lambis Englezos, who is a retired teacher!) at Pheasant Wood in France, all killed in the Battle of Fromelles and buried in a mass grave. I spend about ten hours on the project every couple of months, using my expertise in South Australian records to deal with any SA-based angles other researchers have thrown up during the previous few weeks. I trawl BDM records, newspaper records, cemetery records and a few niche local sources to help find living relatives of WW1 soldiers that can then be approached to submit a DNA sample. If they are from SA, I'm the lead researcher and it's on me to find everything we have in SA that might lead to a living descendant. Last year, for the first time, a soldier I provided the primary research for was identified, and now he lies in a named grave rather than one dedicated to 'the unknown soldier'. Through my involvement in my school's France Trip, it's very likely that in years to come I will get to visit Oscar Baumann's named grave and know that was a gift I gave to him and to his family; a way to say 'thank you' for his service and sacrifice. If you don't currently have a genuine volunteer or community service role, I encourage you to take one on. Think about what skills you have and who might be able to make use of those. Dollars in the bank are not the only way to be rewarded. https://lnkd.in/ge_zH46b
