#HSE has turned 50! 🎂🎉 On January 1st, the Health and Safety Executive celebrated its 50th anniversary! Since 1974, HSE has been working tirelessly to make Great Britain one of the safest places to work, protecting both people and places across the country. This has is clearly reflected when comparing the death at work figures: • 1974 – 651 fatalities • 2023/2024 – 138 fatalities As they look ahead, HSE are continuing to adapt and improve the way they work, ensuring an even safer working environment for everyone in the future. Something, we at SEMA fully support by trying to make the storage equipment and warehousing industry a safer place to work. #HealthandSafetyExecutive #50thAnniversary

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Australian and New Zealand Societies of Air Safety Investigators (ANZSASI) 2024 Regional Air Safety Seminar. This event was an eye-opening experience, which brought together attendees and presenters with decades of invaluable experience to share their wealth of knowledge and perspectives on how safety in the aviation industry can be further improved. The event was also an opportunity for the ASASI and NZSASI members to maintain the close relationships built over time, and served as a reminder for younger aviation professionals to continue the generational work of the industry's pioneers. Here are some of the key learnings I have taken away which will no doubt be of tremendous value to my role in CAR Part 139 and 100 compliance: - There is still a lot to be learned about what an effective and successful SMS should look like. - An overly complicated SMS does not necessarily lead to an effective SMS, but rather, it should be simple enough to allow all members of an organisation to contribute easily. - Understanding the context of the incident or accident is key, and investigators should strive towards identifying issues within the system, not the person. - A high level of operational understanding and partnerships between the aviation and emergency response industries is key to the quality and reliability of an investigation. - Trust in the system, colleagues, employees, and leaders is crucial for an effective SMS and positive safety culture. - Due to the rarity of an incident or accident, recurrent training is vital across the organisation. While these may sound obvious, the seminar highlighted the need for continuous improvement and awareness throughout the industry, and to remind ourselves that the industry and its players must continue to minimise the hazards and risks that arise from the inherently high-risk nature of aviation and its operations.

🚨 A Stark Reminder: Safety Protocols for Crew Members Matter 🚨 Here’s what we can learn and apply to prevent such incidents: 1️⃣ Pre-Departure Safety Checks Are Critical Before stairs or jet bridges are removed, all crew must confirm their positions and safety. A double-check system can eliminate errors. 2️⃣ Communication is Life-Saving Coordination between ground crew, cabin crew, and cockpit must be seamless. Establish clear communication protocols to ensure no step is missed. 3️⃣ Situational Awareness for All Crew members should be trained to stay alert and recognize potential hazards, especially during boarding and deplaning. Let’s learn and act to prevent such incidents. What’s your approach to crew safety? #AviationSafety #HSE #CrewSafety #WorkplaceSafety

AMT recognizes National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) and the importance of raising awareness about work zone safety. Work Zone Awareness Week serves as a critical reminder of the hazards present in work zones and emphasizes the importance of work zone safety. The key message is for drivers to slow down, use extra caution through work zones, and put your phone down while driving. This year’s theme is “Work Zones are Temporary. Actions Behind the wheel can last forever.” Join us online this week as we share safety tips for AMT inspection staff, clients, contractor employees, pedestrians, and motorists. #NWZAW #WorkZoneSafety #teamingourtalentsforyoursuccess #AMTStrong

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have published their Port Marine Safety Code Health Check Findings. This is the output of 28 visits over the 3 year period 2021-3. The approach adopted ISO standard terminology in the form of 'non-conformance' and 'observation'. Though rather unhelpfully, the stats in this document present them as one. The topic with the largest number of 'findings' were 'Duties and Powers', though it is not clear if this is due to a lack of understanding of a port or terminal's own duties or powers, breaches of these, or indeed either of these in relation to an adjacent port/terminal or harbour authority. Aids to navigation had the lowest number of findings. Despite this, it is worth a read and well worth Duty Holders being aware: (a) that they are duty holders; and, (b) what their responsibilities are. All ports/harbours/terminals etc. in the UK are well advised to remain compliant with the Port Marine Safety Code and the associated Guide to Good Practice. #Ports #Harbours #HarbourAuthorities #NavigationalSafety #DutyHolders #PortMarineSafetyCode #PMSC https://lnkd.in/eCD7qHME

June is Safety Month, and it’s a great reminder of the importance of safety in all aspects our lives. Since joining Amtrak, I have learned so much about what safety means and how to prioritize at home and on the job. I wasn't aware of personal protection equipment like steel toe boots and why it is important on a worksite. I didn't know that local communities had alert & notification systems to help prepare and keep families safe. The list goes on. I can now say with confidence that I am personally more aware of my surroundings, I am more planful in daily activities and I communicate with others on safe practices. And in my daily work life, I'm truly inspired by Amtrak's values and commitments and I share in the responsibility of safety everyday. As we observe Safety Month, let’s all take a moment to reflect on the importance of safety and commit to making safe choices. How do you stay safe in your daily life? What resources do you rely on for safety information? Share your tip’s and let’s learn from each other. #NationalSafetyMonth #Amtrak #AmtrakSafety #SafetyisPersonal 🚊 👨👩👧👧

Enhancing Occupational Safety at Airports: Analyzing the Amsterdam Airport Incident In late May 2024, Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport witnessed a tragic incident where a worker was sucked into an aircraft engine, resulting in their death. Such incidents highlight the critical importance of bolstering occupational safety standards and the necessity of implementing stringent preventive measures to avert such tragedies in the future. The incident occurred during a pushback operation, a critical procedure that requires precise coordination between ground crew and flight crew. In this case, it appears that a malfunction or lapse occurred, leading to the worker being caught in the path of an active aircraft engine [oai_citation:1,Witnesses tell of 'hellish noise' as person 'sucked into plane engine' at Amsterdam's Comprehensive training on safety procedures must be provided, covering all potential scenarios, including emergencies. It is essential to organize regular awareness sessions to remind workers of proper procedures and emphasize the importance of strict adherence. Advanced warning systems should be installed to alert workers when they are approaching danger zones. Additionally, smart surveillance cameras should be utilized to analyze behaviors and notify supervisors of any abnormal movements near engines. Establishing strict protocols that mandate the shutdown of aircraft engines during pushback operations or maintenance is crucial. Delineating restricted areas around aircraft and prohibiting entry except in essential situations under direct supervision helps reduce risks. Ensuring effective coordination between ground crews and flight crews to ensure smooth and safe operations is vital. Periodic reviews and updates of existing procedures and protocols based on the latest global practices can aid in preventing the recurrence of such incidents. The Schiphol Airport incident serves as a painful reminder of the significance of occupational safety at airports. By applying the lessons learned and adopting new safety technologies and procedures, we can mitigate the risk of accidents and ensure a safer working environment for all personnel in this vital sector. #OccupationalSafety #AirportSafety #WorkerSafety #AviationSafety #SchipholIncident #SafetyTraining #PreventiveMeasures #WorkplaceSafety #AviationIndustry #SafetyProtocols #RiskManagement
