How do you transform an old factory hall into a sustainable urban icon? In the heart of Amsterdam, you can see just that at KBF Warehouse. Here, a production hall in the Kauwgomballenkwartier transformed into a state-of-the-art creative workplace. But this is more than a transformation - the roof tells the story. 🌿 A roof that does more This is not just any roof. It captures rainwater, generates renewable energy, provides space for biodiversity ánd acts as a green oasis. With 37,200 litres of water buffering, solar panels, and sedum vegetation, the KBF Warehouse brings life back to the city. 🌍 Why is sustainable renovation important? This project shows that reusing buildings not only connects past and future, but also offers climate-adaptive solutions. Here, creativity, sustainability and urban innovation come together, with the aim of creating a future-proof and liveable environment where both people and nature can thrive in harmony. 💡 Did you know? ...that the KBF Warehouse has been nominated for Roof of the Year 2024? DESIGNING THE IRRESISTIBLE CIRCULAR SOCIETY....💡 ....´By designing products, services, experiences and systems to be irresistible, we aim for a future where sustainability in urban transformation becomes so attractive that it barely seems like a choice!´🙏 Today I had the pleasure of attending the DESIRE conference in BLOX to celebrate the result and dedicated work on the Desire project. The DESIRE project (Designing the Irresistible Circular Society) is one out of six ambitious lighthouse projects under the New European Bauhaus initiative, which was launched in 2021 to translate the European Green Deal into real, tangible change, bringing innovation, ambition, and creativity together to create a new vision for cities worldwide. The project illustrates that: 👉Local engagement initiatives played a crucial role in shaping the identity of places and sense of belonging 👉Cross-collaboration with a broad field of stakeholders ensures that various perspectives were considered in the development of the transformation 👉Institutional collaboration and governance are important to secure long-term success of urban transformation DESIRE aims to create a movement that sets new standards and develops methods for how Europe transforms existing urban spaces and creates new neighbourhoods through urban development, renovation and construction with respect for the planet and people's different ways of living. As we approach the project’s conclusion in November 2024, I look forward to seeing how this project will inspire further creativity to solve societal challenges and highlight the importance/potential of the creative industries such as art, design, and architecture to play key roles in exploring an irresistible circular society where….. 👉´SUSTAINABLE TRANSFORMATION BECOMES SO ATTRACTIVE THAT IT BARELY SEEMS LIKE A CHOICE! ´ 👈 In a common call to action, we are proud to have been a part of the Desire process together with BLOXHUB, Danish Architecture Center (Dansk Arkitektur Center), DDC – Danish Design Center and Danish Industry in the creation of a shared Danish proposal for the project. Ever imagined a London where skyscrapers breathe? What if we could turn our concrete jungle into a real urban forest? By covering our buildings in carefully selected trees and plants, we're not just making them Instagram-worthy - we're creating natural air filters that combat pollution right where we live and work. But here's what really excites me: these green buildings are smart buildings. In summer, they naturally cool our offices, and in winter, they help keep the warmth in. It's not just about looking good; it's about working smarter. As someone passionate about sustainable architecture, I believe we're at a turning point. We can choose to build structures that not only serve people but also protect our planet. What do you think about bringing more nature into our urban spaces?

RISE – Hofpleintoren, one of our groundbreaking projects in the Netherlands, is set to redefine the skyline of Rotterdam. Standing at an impressive 286 meters, RISE will become the tallest inhabited building in the European Union, surpassing the next tallest structure in the Netherlands by more than 70 meters. Our Rotterdam team has been instrumental in this ambitious endeavour, leveraging their extensive expertise in structural engineering and high-rise construction. Through rapid digital prototyping, we’ve optimised the design, achieving roughly 20% reduction in building costs for the stability system while minimising the carbon footprint. This vibrant mixed-use development will feature retail spaces, cafes, a hotel, a health centre and affordable housing, ensuring that high-rise living is accessible to all. With a focus on sustainability, we’ve utilised advanced computational design tools to streamline construction processes and reduce material usage. Building such a towering structure for a city with limited high-rise buildings presents unique challenges due to a constrained urban environment. Discover the full story behind this landmark project and see how we're shaping the future of Rotterdam on our website: https://buro.im/3CL0ExA #BuroHappold #Hofpleintoren #Rotterdam #SustainableArchitecture #StructuralEngineering #BuroHappold #Innovation #UrbanDevelopment

The Masaryčka building in Prague by ZHA for Penta Real Estate is named Czech Republic’s “Building of the Year 2024” The annual competition ‘Building of the Year’ recognises the most important architectural and construction projects in the Czech Republic, this year held in Prague’s Rudolfinum. Integrating with Czech Railways’ reconstruction of the Masaryk Railway Station, Masaryčka establishes a dialogue with the urbanism of Prague’s Old Town, known as ‘the golden city of 100 spires’. Defined by circulation routes giving access to new civic spaces and vital upgrade to an important transport hub, Masaryčka is located adjacent to the historic railway station on a derelict site that had stood abandoned for several decades. Transforming the existing car park on Havlíčkova Boulevard into new public square, creating a welcoming gateway to the city for suburban & domestic rail services and passengers using the planned airport rail link. External fins within Masaryčka’s façade transform the project’s horizontal composition along Na Florenci Street to the verticality of its western end facing the spires of the Old Town. Achieving LEED Platinum certification and meeting RIBA 2025 targets for embodied & operational carbon, Masaryčka’s design incorporates roof gardens and a triple-insulated façade that ensures optimal natural light at all work stations. Photovoltaics harvest renewable energy while natural ventilation supported by smart management systems will reduce energy consumption.
