Seeking solutions for the energy transition and decarbonization in transportation is also on Suzano’s horizon. We have established a partnership with Eletrobras to study the development of sustainable solutions such as green hydrogen and synthetic fuels. The research will focus on the technical and economic feasibility of utilising natural biogenic CO2 generated as part of Suzano’s current production process to manufacture new forms of sustainable fuels. Biogenic CO2 is generated from the burning of biomass and black liquor derived from the pulp production process at Suzano's mills. It can be captured at source and mixed with renewable hydrogen, generated from water electrolysis, to produce synthetic and clean fuel, especially e-methanol, one of the most likely candidates to replace fossil fuels in the maritime industry. The study will also assess the viability of constructing a synthetic fuel production unit. Congrats, Paulo Henrique Squariz, on this new and disruptive initiative! With the right partners, in cooperation, Suzano has proven that eucalyptus is a sustainable source to boost the bioeconomy. #WePlantTheFuture #bioeconomy #energy

Micro4Biogas project: Shedding light on biogas’ microbial key players With the current climate crisis, pollution, and biodiversity loss, a new bioeconomy is essential. Biogas holds critical potential for sustainable solutions. Currently, about 10% of global energy comes from bioenergy. Biogas, specifically, is a potentially highly sustainable energy source due to it being created via the decomposition of waste products (manure, waste food, etc.) with natural bacteria. The University of Valencia’s Professor Manuel Porcar discusses the issues facing biogas production, and the solutions from their project: MICRO4BIOGAS. https://lnkd.in/eQwkGdev #science #research #innovation #euproject #biogas

Glad to share our research article “Investigating the sustainability of biogas recovery systems in wastewater treatment plants- A circular bioeconomy approach” in “Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews”. https://lnkd.in/dd4GMWsg [open access]. Thanks Akash Som Gupta for leading this paper. Advanced wastewater treatment options offer a unique opportunity to recover valuable resources such as energy (biogas), nutrients, and minerals embedded in the wastewater streams. However, considerable challenges remain when designing and planning sustainable wastewater treatment systems. The study investigates the performance of a biogas recovery system in different scenarios and applications. This research also demonstrates the interlinkages between sustainable development goals and various benefits of resource recovery systems. This study could be helpful for decision-makers involved in planning and deploying resource recovery systems in a circular bioeconomy approach in WWTPs globally. Research highlights: →Managing wastewater is urgently required for environmental sustainability →Biogas recovery from WWTPs aids in achieving energy security and reducing emissions →The study assesses the sustainability of recovering biogas from wastewater →Levelized cost of biogas generation (LCOB) from WWTP is estimated at 0.08 EUR/m³ →Quality of wastewater, energy prices, and capital investments are the key factors →Wastewater resource recovery facilities can create multiple benefits

🌿Exciting progress is on the horizon for the SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT in the coming years. One of our main focuses this year is on achieving significant milestones at the Baix Llobregat, Barcelona (Aigües de Barcelona), case demonstration plant (CS1) that produces biomethane from sewage sludge (visit our blog for CS1 details https://lnkd.in/ePeJwpQE). 🏗️We're excited to announce that we're entering the final design stages of the proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMEL) with the stack having already begun construction, and we anticipate hydrogen production by 2025. This hydrogen will complement our biomethanation technology, enriching the methane content from 65% to <95%. 🏭Simultaneously, the biomethanation process is also deep into its design phase, already having a satisfactory process flow diagram. This plant is scheduled to start at the end of the year, and it is expected to be operational in 2025. 🚌Looking ahead to the long term, as we approach 2025 and the biomethanation plant reaches its full operational capacity, our plan is to supply biomethane to two buses operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). Following this, a comprehensive study will be conducted to evaluate the impact on engine performance, ensuring optimal results and closely monitoring potential issues such as H2S and siloxanes. In parallel, SINTEF and DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH will undertake a techno-economic analysis to assess the long-term financial viability of CS1. Stay tuned for updates on these important milestones. Stay tuned for overall project progress! #Biomethane #Biogas #Hydrogen #Sustainability #GreenEnergyEU
