If you feel like writing your marketing emails is a chore, try this instead 👇🏻 During one of my many Power Hours back in September(+ most of them last year), my client said,“It just feels like a chore. I don’t want to do it, I just know that I should.” They were uncomfortable. And you probably are too. Because it’s human nature to feel uneasy when you start doing something new for the first time. So I challenge you to make it fun, and like something you look forward to. For the client I worked with back last year, I suggested she block her calendar one day per week, that fits within her life, and take herself to a bout coffee shop for a treat (cake encouraged). This way it changed up her environment, became a habit once per week, and she felt rewarded. Does it work? Well, she’s sent an email every single week since, 6 months straight. She now looks forward to her Friday coffee shop visit & tries a new cake every week. Plus, the many clients, calls & opportunities that have come from sending them far outweigh the cost of the coffee & cake! Your marketing doesn’t have to be a chore. It doesn’t have to be boring. It can add to your life rather than take away from it. Pairing this with a strong strategy will help you feel on top of the world and like a real badass boss. Will you try it? I enjoy working in marketing and often wish I'd made the switch earlier in my career. But having a business career before marketing does have some advantages. The biggest is an inbuilt reality check for marketing trends, terms and beliefs. There's always a deep sigh, for example, when I see marketers talking about educating prospects and prospects being 'problem unaware.' In my previous life, problems were relentless hunters. They'd find me whether I was behind my desk, on a flight, in a business meeting or even on holiday. I never had to go exploring. The idea that they lurked in the shadows waiting for a kindly marketer to point a flashlight at them... hmm. Problems lived in three buckets. Ones had had to sort out now, ones that I'd have to sort out some time, and ones I wasn't even ready to think about because I had numbers to hit. I certainly wasn't looking for opportunities to spend more of the company's money (bad for the bonus). So good luck trying to fill my pockets with 'value,' educating me, or creating demand (chortle). Perhaps I might even have resented the arrogance of a marketer who knows nothing about me, my job, my clients or my business telling me they can make everything OK. The answer to all my problems is, guess what, the very thing they happen to be selling. When a problem eventually grew to a size I couldn't ignore, loomed menacingly over my desk and inhabited my waking thoughts, my first question was: 'who do I know that can help?' The second was: 'which option is likely to cause me the least aggravation and be the easiest to get approved?' Generally I was looking for a Skoda rather than a futuristic AI-powered concept car. On the other hand... Marketers who talk about progressively reinforcing memory structures in potential buyers' minds, focusing on trust building, researching and defining the ideal customer profile, developing a solid and relevant value proposition, investing in creative an thought-provoking content and generally calming the **** down... those, my former self is ready to listen to.

How can marketing be a full time job? Just like many other people probably still think, I just figured marketing teams and individuals posted a few templated paid ads to get customers and then raked in the dough once hundreds of people clicked and bought the products. I have been consistent on LinkedIn for nearly 3 weeks now which is not a lot compared to several people on the platform. But one of my largest takeaways has been that my previous perception of marketing was way off and the reality is far more complicated. Something that I found most interesting of all was after tuning into seminars led by successful people on this platform was that even they found value in spending large sums of money to learn from other experts about strategies to better market themselves and my mind has opened up into a world, an art I didn't know existed. And these people talking about spending money were probably already pretty good at selling themselves without having spent that money. I am great at software and mentoring and math, but I've learned that at least right now relatively speaking I am a lost fish in the pool of marketing but I've met so many knowledgeable people already who are helping me learn and opening my mind. What advice would I give people new to LinkedIn and consistency? Basically open up your mind, and don't assume that people doing things you think are easy are twiddling their thumbs all day. There are marketing teams and departments for a reason.

Because consistently taking small actions toward marketing your business will add up over time. And before you know it, you'll start seeing more leads, more traffic, and more growth. 2.5 years ago when I started my agency, everyone was saying: ”It’s an overcrowded space” ”There is a sea of marketing agencies” ”People don’t need another marketing agency”. And for a second, I believed them. (Honestly for more than a second 😂) But we knew we could add real value, so, against all advice, we dove in and gave it a shot. I was still worried about the fact that: We weren’t like traditional agencies. We were just two young lads getting started. We didn’t have a “network” or daddy to open doors. And there was a huge chance we’d never sign a single client. But we got our heads down, and got to work. Today nearly 3 years later we: ˃ Work with brands like the NHS. ˃ We have a growing full time team of 13. And we’ve told stories for some of the biggest companies worldwide. It’s been hard work, long hours, late nights and weekends. And I can’t lie… I’ve had a bloody good time doing it 😂 But today isn’t about who I work with or whether I enjoy my life. If it's summer, there's a 95% chance I'm not at home. I'm a part-time RVer. And, as much as I love my house, it's awesome to just get away. Go see new sights, take my dog hiking, try the local fare, drink some bourbon in the evenings in new scenery. I love it. But the BEST thing about it? I do better work. I find that if I stay in a place too long, my writing feels forced. Things are harder to articulate. Everything feels tight. So, a change of scenery is EXACTLY what I need to get the juices flowing again. Good marketing does the same thing. Your prospective clients get stuck - either physically or in their own thoughts - and instead of doing something about their problem, it's just easier to do nothing and deal with it another day. A great email sequence or dialed in sales funnel helps take them to a new mental place. Gives them some new scenery. A new way of thinking about their issue. If it's good enough, they'll decide they want to stay in that place permanently. And they'll want to give you money to help them get there. Does your marketing have this effect on people?
