Architects: Our buildings are more than pretty pictures. I received many cards from colleagues, friends, and family this past holiday. Those from architects showcased their most photogenic projects, often without any people in them. In contrast, my friends and family, of course, had images of themselves, but they also shared stories of their personal growth and the impacts they've made throughout the year. For people to truly understand what we do, we need them to understand the value of the work and the ingenuity behind the picture. Sure, our buildings can be beautiful, but they're so much more than that. They're about the people who inhabit them, the stories they hold, and the change they bring. Please remember that every communication you send out is more than just a showcase of your work - it's a testament to the value your unique way of thinking brought to the project and the result of the long process it took to get there. Every time you publish a post, send an email, or share a picture, you can demonstrate the value you, as an architect, bring to the table. And that goes beyond the aesthetics of your creations. Our role in shaping buildings, weaving stories through materials, and molding spaces that impact lives are the factors that turn someone who follows you on LinkedIn into a client. If we want to enhance the perceived value of architecture, we need to be better storytellers. We must highlight the ‘what’ and the 'who' and 'why' behind our buildings.
