Plan Ahead: Leverage the insights from your FBAs to create proactive BIPs for the next school year. Focus on strategies that encourage positive behaviors and support student success. Is your school’s PBIS system building trust, fostering community, and recognizing the unique strengths students bring to school every day? Or is it relying on rewards like a bag of chips to motivate them? PBIS has historically leaned too heavily on incentives, and while well-intentioned, this approach can often undermine the very relationships it aims to strengthen.  Recognition should never be transactional. When we focus on rewarding behavior, we risk teaching students that their contributions are only valuable if they come with a prize. This not only detracts from the deeper purpose of PBIS but also shifts attention away from the relationships and intrinsic motivation that truly drive positive behavior.  A better approach is one rooted in connection and trust. Recognizing a student’s effort, perseverance, or kindness with genuine acknowledgment—like “I noticed how you included a classmate today” or “You stayed focused during a challenging task”—goes further than any incentive ever could. It helps students see their own value, not in what they earn but in who they are and how they contribute to their community.  It’s time to move beyond rewards and focus on what really matters: building a school culture grounded in trust, relationships, and the recognition of every student’s strengths.
