Last week, I attended an event by LSE Cities on "Caregiver wellbeing and urban policy". It was the first time I hear Lucy Jones speak about her book "Matrescence: on the metamorphosis of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood". As a mother of a young child, an immigrant in a city with limited support network, having given birth during COVID-19 where access to in-person support was even more challenging, urban / public spaces where my lifeline for keeping sane and for getting over post-partum depression. I couldn't resonate more with the keynote from Lucy or with the discussion that followed with Kate Laffan and Katie Beck. I wish I was able to read the book then, it is now on my TBR list. I highly recommend listening to the recording of the event: https://lnkd.in/em6yUmZm Cities can be amazing melting pots. Vibrant urban streets are where we can meet new people, exchange ideas, innovate and be energized. Yet, especially in the isolating first few months (or dare I say year) of parenthood, cities need to ensure caregivers are included and able to connect to others; be it by designing sidewalks that are wide enough for multiple strollers to fit as new parents bond together and the little ones nap or by ensuring family rooms and washrooms are available near playgrounds. Creating spaces for caregivers in congested and bustling cities is also important. In Toronto, and after the pandemic lockdowns have eased, my other lifeline was the Early On centers run *for free* by the city, providing spaces for parents to connect while their infants and toddlers enjoy age appropriate activities -indoors in the cold winter months and in a park during summer days. College Montrose Children's Place hosted the Early On program my kid and I went to twice or three times a week. It is there that I met with other parents and amazing early childhood educators like Romana H. for whom I am eternally grateful. Cities need such programs. Unfortunately, those programs are the first on the list to be scrapped off in times of budget cuts. College Montrose Children's Place is at risk of losing its home at the Artscape Center. We shouldn't let it. On Aug 17, my kid will be participating in a fundraiser toddle to support CMCP. Learn more (and donate if you can) here: https://lnkd.in/eXnhZaeA And if you are an urbanist or a new parent - or both - do listen to that LSE Cities event recording! You will be thankful you did.

Partnering with Organisations to Support Employees Caring for Parents or Elderly Relatives | Employee Wellbeing Expert | Trainer | Coach | Consultant
“𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝, 𝙨𝙤 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙙, 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙮 𝙟𝙤𝙗 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙮 𝙢𝙪𝙢.” “𝙄 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖 𝙝𝙪𝙜 – 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙤 𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜!” There are no words to respond to the things that were said to me yesterday at the Leeds Local Care Partnership Forum. They are so much more than comments—they’re a glimpse into the invisible struggles so many people are carrying while trying to juggle work and care for their parents, often without getting the support they desperately need. It’s truly heartbreaking to think that people in these situations feel they’ve not been seen or heard. This is why I’m so passionate about the work I do. Partnering with organisations to raise awareness, offer training, and provide real solutions can make a huge difference to those who feel isolated in their experiences, caring for parents or elderly relatives. Let's get the word out. No one should have to choose between their job and caring for their family. 👉 DM or email (sherry@sherryking.co.uk) if you’d like to learn more about how I can help support your employees and develop a workplace culture that values understanding and compassion for carers at its core—or if you or someone you know is caring for parents and looking for emotional or practical support. #SandwichGeneration #Caregiving #SupportForCarers #WorkLifeBalance #EmployeeWellbeing
