With over 2 billion voters preparing for national elections, the threat of deepfakes looms large. A recent article by POLITICO reveals how accessible AI tools fuel the rise of false content, inundating social media with fabricated videos and images that blur the lines of reality. The ability of deepfakes to manipulate public opinion and distort political discourse poses a grave threat to the democratic process, prompting experts to sound the alarm. Recent months have seen a surge in AI-generated deepfakes across platforms like X, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance and critical thinking. AI is evolving, so must our defenses against misuse. In the face of this digital deception, the age-old question persists: “How can you tell what’s real from what’s fake?” ↳Check sources for credibility and cross-reference information. ↳Spot anomalies in movement and speech.  ↳Use tech to detect manipulation. However, the battle against deepfakes is far from over. As AI-powered generative tools become increasingly accessible, the challenge of distinguishing between authentic content and sophisticated forgeries grows ever more daunting. It is a task that requires not only technological innovation but also a fundamental shift in our approach to media literacy and critical thinking. I was asked by WIRED for my prediction for 2024. Here it is: "AI-generated fake news is coming to an election near you! Research shows that (1) AI-generated disinformation is more persuasive than human-written disinformation, (2) AI supercharges and automates the micro-targeting process, (3) people are bad at distinguishing fake AI from genuine content, and (4) studies show deepfakes impact our political attitudes.

Very interesting and highly concerning new piece out from Proof News: https://lnkd.in/gmB-qbU4 Researchers formulated 26 different questions that typical users/voters might have about election topics, and asked those questions of five different generative AI text models (Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, OpenAI's GPT-4, Meta's Llama 2, and Mistral's Mixtral) that are used to power a variety of online chatbots. The group of election experts (state and local election officials and AI experts) then rated the 130 AI responses for bias, accuracy, completeness, and harmfulness. Over half (51%) of the answers were found to be inaccurate, 40% were found to be harmful, 38% were found to be incomplete, and 13% were found to be biased -- a scarily dismal showing. It's not enough to address Ai-generated disinformation like deepfake video and audio - we must also reinforce guardrails to protect against Ai-generated misinformation being pumped out through APIs. #elections #ai #llm #misinformation

As AI technology continues to advance, the proliferation of deepfakes poses a significant threat to the integrity of information and the public discourse 😱 The recent study by POLITICO highlights the challenges we face in distinguishing between real and AI-generated content. With the average person only able to detect digital forgeries 60 percent of the time, it is clear that we need to be vigilant and proactive in addressing the spread of deepfakes. Moving forward, I urge my colleagues to stay vigilant and critical when consuming media online. By staying informed and aware of the dangers of deepfakes, we can work together to mitigate their impact and protect the integrity of our information ecosystem. #deepfake #ai #technology
