Earlier this week the Iron Power eco-system presented its new vision document on "Iron Power in the energy transition". Iron powder stands out as a promising metal fuel due to its circular, sustainable, and potentially high-efficiency processes. As an efficient energy carrier, iron powder can be transported easily with vessels, local distribution, and longtime (de)central storage. Moreover, it can be directly used as a fuel in high-grade industrial heating applications. Iron powder has the potential to become a -complementary- energy carrier, especially when integrated with high-grade heat generation. As such, the Iron Power concept is uniquely positioned to contribute significantly to the global energy transition. Do you know that most energy consumption in countries like the Netherlands is actually heat (about 80% of all energy)? The Metalot iron fuel technology of prof. Philip De Goey makes it possible to produce renewable energy, convert it in iron fuel which can be transported (or stored, especially interesting in case of a local cycle) easily, safe and cheap, use the iron fuel as heat source and afterwards regenerate the iron fuel again in a region where lots of renewable energy is available. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟   Stadtwerke Flensburg GmbH teams up with Gradyent to lower temperatures in their district heating system and improve the operation for a number of new large #heatpumps🌡️    Stadtwerke Flensburg, the innovative public utility company in Flensburg, Germany, remains steadfast in its commitment to #Decarbonization and CO2 neutrality. Vacuum Insulation: Award-Winning Technology At the Bavarian Energy Research and Innovation Day, Tobias Gotthardt, State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy, honored va-Q-tec as one of the winners of the ideas competition "Innovations in Thermal Energy Technology". The submitted project aims to significantly improve energy efficiency in buildings. The innovative vacuum insulation can save large amounts of energy while also significantly improving fire protection. This technology therefore makes a double contribution to sustainability: saving energy and increasing safety. Founder and CEO Dr. Joachim Kuhn aptly states: "For over 20 years, va-Q-tec has been developing and producing highly insulating vacuum insulation, which has since saved countless gigawatt hours of energy. In addition to energy savings, fire protection is also a critical consideration in building insulation." "This award confirms our ongoing efforts and serves as an incentive to continue developing innovative and sustainable solutions. More than 50% of our energy consumption in Germany is used for thermal purposes -> heat 🔥 & cold ❄. If we consider private living it is even more than 75%. Of course it is absolutely important to produce the energy demand in a most efficient way. However increasing energy efficiency by reducing the heat losses with good insulation always has to be option number one 🏆 . Its simpler, cheaper and more sustainable. According to our principle "the best kWh ist the one not produced" our high performance vacuum panels save a huge amount of energy in many different applications. With our innovation we will meet the highest fire protection standard as well as the highest energy efficiency level. 🔋 The repurposing of (aged) traction batteries is becoming increasingly relevant for battery circular economy. Nevertheless, there are numerous challenges that prevent the continuous repurposing of second-life batteries (SLB) in stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS). 📖 In our first literature review last year, we could already identify over 23 challenges mentioned by researchers. (https://lnkd.in/eDGY787U) 🏭 As part of our current research, we conducted a total of 3 industry studies with over 20 battery experts from Europe, revealing predominant concerns about the economic viability of repurposing SLBs in stationary BESS. 💹 In the following, we could confirm this industry statement by comparing the SLB costs of ten literature studies, estimating SLB cost between 25 to 110 €/kWh. ⏭ Further details and results of the industry studies can be found in our latest research article on the topic of "Identification and Mitigation of Predominant Challenges in the Utilization of Aged Traction Batteries within Stationary Second-Life Scenarios", which was elaborated in cooperation with my colleagues Daniel Holz, Domenic Klohs, Christian Offermanns, Heiner Heimes and Achim Kampker at PEM RWTH Aachen University. 🔍 Link to our research article: https://lnkd.in/eJCW3QAE
