Welcome to the Lightning Round of our Energy series, Science vs. Fiction! We snuck in this challenge last week (call it a fracking foul-up?) – so here it is again as a reminder: When treating a sour fluid such as hydrocarbon or produced water, very often the only measurement of H2S present is the gas content in head space as determined by a Draeger tube or similar. This is because it is by far the easiest measurement that can be made in field operations. Since H2S is treated by a chemical scavenger in the LIQUID phase, a conversion calculation must be made to estimate the liquid scavenger treat rate required to reduce the head space concentration down to the required value. This is a very simple calculation and can be done with a high degree of precision and accuracy. Is this Science or Fiction?
