Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is leading the way in innovation with its new BloodTrack blood storage systems, now piloting at the hospital. This advanced technology places blood products closer to the patient bedside, allowing clinicians to deliver life-saving transfusions more quickly, accurately, and safely. With SNGH conducting over 2,250 transfusions monthly, this program represents the future of patient care—and highlights the critical need for blood donations. January is Blood Donor Month, a time to honor donors and encourage others to give. “One donation can save up to three lives,” said Ian Noga, vice president of laboratory services. The Blood Connection opened its first donation center in eastern North Carolina earlier this month. Thanks to the center, not only is it easier for community members to give blood, but it's easier for patients in the East to receive blood. "This partnership is vital to our ability to treat patients," said Caryl Havasy, executive director for laboratory services at ECU Health. "We as a system see over 30 patients a day who require blood transfusions. So, this is huge for our community as it increases our donor base and then provides more blood products across eastern North Carolina." Learn more about the center here: https://lnkd.in/ev2QasF2

While many are familiar with the need for blood donation, the unique role of plasma donation may not always receive the same level of attention. Both blood and plasma donations are equally important in supporting healthcare systems and saving lives. Share the stories and experiences of patients and plasma donors to inspire others. By highlighting the impact that individual donors have on saving and improving lives, we can encourage more people to donate. 🩸 Did you know that nearly half of post-Millennials are from diverse communities, yet a significant portion of blood donations today comes from those over 50? How can we ensure a sustainable blood supply for the future? Patients with conditions like Sickle Cell disease and Thalassemia require specially matched blood, often from donors of similar ethnic backgrounds. That’s why we’re advocating for a new pilot program to provide grant funding for blood centers to reach out to young and diverse donors. This will help diversify the donor base and ensure all patients can get the blood transfusions they need when they need them. Take action with us and more than 80 national organizations this #BloodAdvocacyWeek and urge your members of Congress to support initiatives that enhance diversity in the blood supply: https://bit.ly/3xiD74I #BloodAdvocacy #BloodAdvocacyWeek

SSMC is on the way! Proud to be the first hospital in UAE to support the trauma program with whole blood. Whole blood and trauma When discussing "whole blood" in the context of trauma, it's typically in reference to the use of whole blood transfusions as part of the treatment for patients who have suffered traumatic injuries, especially those involving significant blood loss. Traditionally, blood transfusion for trauma patients involved the separate administration of red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, often in a set ratio. However, in recent years, there's been a shift towards using whole blood in certain trauma scenarios. This is because whole blood contains all the components of blood in their natural proportions, which can be more effective in replicating the blood's natural functions. Some of the key points in favor of whole blood transfusion in trauma are: Improved Coagulation: Whole blood contains coagulation factors and platelets in optimal and natural ratios, which can be crucial for patients experiencing significant bleeding. Simplification of Logistics: Using whole blood can simplify the logistics of blood transfusion in trauma care, as it involves managing a single blood product instead of multiple components. Potential for Better Outcomes: Some studies have suggested that trauma patients who receive whole blood may have better outcomes compared to those who receive separate components, although research in this area is ongoing. However, the use of whole blood in trauma care is not without challenges. These include issues related to availability, storage, and compatibility testing. Additionally, the approach to blood transfusion in trauma care is continuously evolving with ongoing research and development in this field. #whole blood; #ssmc
Major Milestone Achieved for the Whole Blood Initiative! 100 units of whole blood have been transfused by EMS since the program started in October 2022! Now available in four jurisdictions, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach, for trauma, medical and pediatric patients to receive whole blood BEFORE they arrive at a hospital for further treatment. Receiving whole blood helps to stabilize patients and improve their chance for survival. You can support the Whole Blood Initiative with a financial donation and also GIVE BLOOD at a TEMS sponsored Blood Drive. Learn more about the program: https://lnkd.in/eyJf5NXc. 🌟 November 11, 1987: A Milestone in Medical Innovation 🌟 On this day in 1987, the world witnessed a breakthrough: the first public sale of artificial human blood plasma. This pioneering event marked a turning point in medical science, showing us what’s possible when innovation meets compassion. Artificial plasma offered a temporary solution for patients in crisis, yet it underscored a vital truth: there’s no true substitute for human blood. Despite advances, the need for blood donations remains as critical as ever. So, why should we donate blood? Blood isn’t just a vital fluid; it’s a lifeline that connects us all. Every time you donate, you’re giving others a fighting chance. Here are three powerful reasons to consider: 1. Saving Lives – One blood donation can save up to three lives. That’s three individuals—a parent, child, or friend—whose lives continue thanks to a selfless act. 2. Supporting Our Healthcare System – Donated blood is essential for surgeries, trauma care, and cancer treatments. Hospitals rely on regular donations to provide immediate care, especially in emergencies. 3. Strengthening Our Communities – Blood donation fosters a bond within communities. When we give, we’re not just donating blood; we’re building a support network that ensures no one faces life’s toughest battles alone. Where Can You Donate? You can donate at local blood banks, hospitals, and community blood drives. Businesses can host a corporate blood donation drive for employees too. The American Red Cross and regional blood centers are always ready to welcome new donors. Many places offer mobile drives to make it even easier. By donating, you become part of something bigger—a collective effort to save lives. Imagine the impact if every eligible person donated just once a year. Together, we could end blood shortages and support every patient in need. Let’s turn awareness into action. This November 11th, in honor of a medical milestone, consider donating blood to give others the chance at more tomorrows. 💪❤️ #BloodDonation #SavingLives #ActionOverWords #CommunitySupport #MedicalInnovation #November11 #GiveBlood

As a healthcare professional, you’ve probably witnessed firsthand the critical role blood donors play in saving lives. From emergency surgeries to treating chronic conditions, donated blood is often the difference between life and death. Yet, despite its importance, blood shortages remain a global challenge, especially during the winter months. National Blood Donor Month is a time when we, as a healthcare community, can encourage more people to donate. 🩹 Why it matters: A single blood donation can save up to three lives. Patients undergoing treatments for leukaemia often rely on regular blood transfusions. Ongoing shortages put vulnerable patients at risk of delayed or compromised care. 💉 How you can help: Share the need for blood donation with patients, friends, and family. Encourage your networks to register as donors and make it part of their routine. Thank the donors who make a difference. Doing this, we can help to build a more resilient blood supply and ensure no patient is left waiting for care.
