Eleven years ago, Shietta started as an Nursing Care Partner at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Driven by her commitment to excellence, she sought more for herself and her sons and continued to apply to nursing schools despite facing multiple rejections. Shietta was ultimately accepted and passed her boards with flying colors! Shietta’s dedication and commitment to excellence shines through the praise she receives from patients and colleagues. One of the things that brings me joy everyday is being closest to those who provide care to our patients, families and the communities we serve. Today I had the pleasure of rounding on the nursing units at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital with Patricia Laurie, Director of Nursing. It was obvious to me that Trish is an engaged leader who is well respected by her team as the interactions seemed very genuine and authentic. There were many positive stories shared and the pride of the team as they talked about what is working well was very evident. Thank you, Dan Carey, Anne Stewart, Patricia Lurie, Maya Vulaj, Nurse Manager 7N. What is in a name? For many years, Ohio providers have referred to our nursing assistants as "State-tested nursing assistants" or "STNAs". Meanwhile, most of the country refer to them as "certified nursing assistants" or "CNAs". Our nursing assistants are more than just state-tested. They complete a rigorous course of study and earn a certification by demonstrating competencies in their profession. It is past time that we honor our nursing assistants with a title more befitting their accomplishments. Senate Bill 144 accomplished effectively changing this designation for our nursing assistants to CNAs. As long term care providers, we will need to update our job descriptions and policies as well as educate our staff on this change in professional designation. Help OHCA spread the word on this important change in how we view the backbone to our profession- our Certified Nursing Assistants! #CNAOhio #LongTermCare

Stop calling me staff—I'm a Nurse! It’s frustrating to see nursing professionals referred to as "staff," a term so general it doesn't reflect our true roles, responsibilities, or professional identity. Speaking up for the title is fundamental to improving the image of nursing profession. It defines our boundaries, highlights our expertise, and ultimately brings us the recognition and respect we deserve. #NursePride #RespectNurses #ProfessionalIdentity #NursingLeadership #OwnYourTitle
