In continuing the Series on Important stalwarts from Food processing /allied industry. Thanks FT Madhura Gokhale for help in drafting this as Co-author. George Washington Carver: The Peanut Man and Plant Doctor - He was first Afro-American to earn a Bachelor degree in science, first person to extensively worked on agriculture and Processing of agriculture to Food, and how that entire thing will uplift the average american and world citizen's life overall.

This “cause of death vs coverage graphic” was found on Reddit, and the science is missing, but the gap between coverage and reality rings truthful. There are growing gaps between what’s being talked about in agriculture online and in consumer media, and what’s happening in the real world. How can farm and food leaders close the gaps between field reality and messages that are designed to sell political ideologies, or glue eyeballs to LCD screens? I think more field science transparency and less promotion of top-down multinational political policies would help. What do you think?

There is so much great work around improving animal agriculture — efforts to reduce antibiotic usage, lower crowding, make factory farms safer and reduce suffering, improve sustainability. But, without political champions, I worry that these efforts may not succeed. (I also hope I’m very wrong). Political willingness on the part of leaders is absolutely key toward making progress on thorny issues that can impact powerful economic interests and potentially piss off voters. Has the case been made well to them? Are we thinking enough about political leaders? Their strategies? And, where’s the evidence? In this issue area, expert opinions may not always be accurate because the field is so new. What was true in the past or what an experience was like may not predict the future.

Thanks to ffinlo Costain for having me onto 8.9ha to discuss the announcement to scrap #nutrientneutrality. As with most of the Government announcements on nutrient neutrality, it leaves us with more questions than answers. I'll share a few of my top questions below, but one of the most glaring problems is why, having actively promoted a market-driven response to this issue for four years, have they suddenly pivoted to the other option - a (seemingly) strategic approach driven by public investment? Some of my other questions are: 1. Have the Government considered the time it will take to produce strategic plans that can replace nutrient mitigation schemes? 2. How are they going to address the resource shortage in the public and private sector to produce and deliver these plans? 3. What will happen to all the mitigation schemes that have not sold all of their allocation of credits but have land legally bound for up to 125 years? 4. Are they serious about nature markets to support nature recovery?
