One potential solution to AMR is the development of new, more effective antibiotics to replace those which become more resistant. Unfortunately, this is not happening. As SCIENCE writes "...without government intervention, R&D for antibiotics is rarely profitable, and most major pharmaceutical companies have left the field"[17]. The economics of antibiotic discovery and development are further complicated as it, "depends on various factors: which drug and pathogen are involved, the mechanism of antibiotic resistance, the prevalence of that pathogen, the types of infections it causes and their level of transmissibility, the health burden of those infections, and whether alternative treatments are available"[17]. The challenges of misuse (usually over-prescription, but sometimes under-prescription) of antibiotics, particularly in the realm of RTIs, alongside the considerable hurdles in antibiotic research and development present an extremely difficult challenge for global healthcare to address.
