Feel free to explain it: what is your community that you serve/inhabit? What is the most rewarding thing about helping community? What is something that you think communities would benefit from your work, that is different or unconventional? For me personally, my local community is in Upstate New York, and as there are many people who have moved here to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, as well as locals who have lived here for generations, everyone has some story to tell from their perspective of the area’s natural history. One thing that is rewarding about serving it is seeing people and families come together and have fun in a local setting, and seeing that they can do fun and rewarding things for the environment right where they are. And, I truly believe that my community could really start to benefit from their creative projects being celebrated as a new way of collaborating in a local setting, to set an example for other communities. In order to create change, we need to embrace our unique skills and the qualities that make us outstanding. The environment is filled with communities, and we are one of them, contributing to it with our output. Imagine you had a decent-sized bit of land wherever and however that makes sense in your own context, whether urban, peri-urban, in a small town, or rural area Let’s pretend that you like the idea of ‘people’ though you might not be completely sure how to get them together around something meaningful to share or bigger than themselves And although you might have some level of equity in your property just for the pleasure of being able to pay interest to banks, you may not have millions of dollars stashed under your mattress to help you sleep at night Or maybe you do, though you don’t know how to deploy the capital in a truly meaningful way Did you know… That you never evolved/were created/materialised to live in isolation That the shadows of emptiness in the corners of your heart that you fill with chocolate and material things are actually meant to hold space for the hopes and dreams of your community, the people that were called to that place you share with them, you were also called to That money is like shit… excellent activating fertiliser if used in a garden to assist the living though rancid if piled up and put in a box to horde for later That a house is just a box without love and connection making it a home That we really don’t and never will ‘own’ land, the land owns us, and one way or another, we will all return to it That the only truly secure generational wealth to pass on is a connected community based on clean food and water, with the capacity to care for each other That there is no other creature on the planet that has the potential of humans to create an ecological paradise of biological evolution That you have the opportunity to create more meaning and connection in your life through all of the above… If silly things like people and planet have any meaning to you That sometimes, when I’m not caught up in the swirling thoughts of the day and all its pressing concerns, which will mean nothing to me a month from now, I pause and reflect on the questions, “Why am I here?
