A lot of you probably haven't heard about Paul G. He's the goatest of all startup goats. Imagine Usher to Justin Timberlake. Paul G promoted and chose Sam Altman to be the next God of Silicon Valley when he took over as President of YC. Now this is when I was a wee lad, and Silicon Valley was still mega cool. When YC was white hot. And when I was a bit springier. Paul G is the type of guy where a thousand years from now, we'll associate everything wise to. Even things he never said! Like Aesop's fables, Paul G's wisdom on business and value creation will live on for the ages. Some little guy on Mars (maybe my progeny you never know) will read Paul G's fables as well one day. My favourite story in the library of Paul probably was the way he described Uber's Travis Kalanick's unflinching resolve in the face of competition. Some are hungry. And others like Travis are pure psychos. You won't win. Don't even try. In one of his stories, Travis was over for dinner and they decided to play Wii Tennis. Let's just say one broken television later, Travis won. Travis always wins. The frenzied pace of investment in generative AI companies underscores the future competitive landscape in this emerging market. Each company that is trying to build a world-class large language AI model is literally going to guzzle cash - probably for the next decade. The ultimate winner will be determined by the company that generates the most cash (or raises the most money) to keep the innovation train humming. This is not a race about innovation, though. This is a battle over application development. The AI systems that can power the most relevant applications (whether developed internally or by partner software vendors) will draw in the cash that is needed to keep the development flywheel humming. This cash-fueled competition also helps explain the recent spate of big-tech layoffs. For the near term, all cash needs to be focused on winning the AI prize. #ArtificialIntelligence #VentureCapital #AppliedAI
