THE FINAL OCEANSWEET: oceanScoop, identifying true detection depth. Accurate detection depths give our clients confidence. Commercially available software only shows where coverage has been achieved relative to a constant depth below seabed. OceanScoop gives the full picture: a comprehensive map of true depth to which targets can be detected. Think of an ice cream scoop representing the detection range of the magnetometer carving out the surface of a tub of ice cream (the seabed). The resulting surface represents the depth below seabed to which mag targets have been detected. In some cases this may be considerably deeper than the reference depth; for example - allowing accurate knowledge of the maximum depth that can be trenched safely. oceanScoop uses a GPU-accelerated CDM (Coverage Depth Map) algorithm to calculate accurate CDMs in a fraction of the time taken by rudimentary commercially available methods. The CDM algorithm calculates the detection depth using the magnetometer track and altimeter data along with the MBES bathymetry. From all of us @Ocean Geophysics we hope you have enjoyed our series of OceanSweets. Which one did you enjoy the most? #geophysics #offshorewind

𝐄𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭 3𝐃 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 In geophysics, Euler Deconvolution is a widely-used tool for estimating the approximate location and depth of subsurface sources in magnetic and gravity data. It’s powerful for quickly identifying potential source locations, making it an essential method for early-stage exploration. However, it’s important to recognize its limitations. While Euler Deconvolution provides rough estimates of where a source may be, it’s not intended to give precise 3D structural interpretations. The method often produces non-unique solutions, which require further filtering and analysis. Moreover, its assumption of simple source geometries doesn’t always align with complex real-world structures. So, while Euler Deconvolution helps you zero in on approximate locations, it’s not the tool for detailed 3D structural models. For that, more advanced methods or multi-disciplinary approaches are required. In Seismic Soundoff episode 210, David Lubo-Robles highlights his award-winning paper that utilized novel machine learning methods to enhance interpretability in seismic volume data from the Gulf of Mexico. In a discussion with host Andrew Geary, Lubo-Robles takes us through his team’s research using two open-source tools – SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations) and LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations) – in enhancing the interpretability of machine models. This research garnered an Honorable Mention for Best Paper in Interpretation. He also shares his journey into geophysics, driven by a fascination with the Earth and energy discovery. The episode addresses common misconceptions about machine learning in geophysics, emphasizing the need for critical thinking and geological knowledge to apply these advanced techniques.
