The largest Broadband operators in the US are making moves towards DOCSIS 4.0, enabling faster speeds than ever over existing HFC plant. In the past, broadband operators could offer great download speeds but were more limited on upstream. The new DOCSIS spec is enabling up to 2 Gbps symmetrical access and perhaps more in the future. 2024 will be the year of speed reminiscent of the launch of DOCSIS 3.0 years ago. Highlights and what this means for your business: Cable Cos will rollout and expand DOCSIS 4.0 meaning multi-gig speeds - I disagree about the availability of symmetrical speeds over HFC Telcos will continue to expand PON - AT&T ABF, FiOS, etc - with AT&T leading the charge in expanding fiber Increasing speeds over PON - 25G is the new benchmark Some Cable Cos will focus on pushing the limits of DOCSIS 3.1 to offer higher speeds and more capabilities. In spite of the article, 100G over PON is still years away. Businesses with satellite offices or multilocation operators that don't have Ethernet or Enterprise fiber readily available will be able to secure higher bandwidth broadband than ever but without Enterprise SLAs. Reliability has and will continue to go up for wireline broadband services. Prices will vary but DOCSIS 4.0 services from the Cable Cos will be priced at a premium. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to DOCSIS 4.0 deployments, CableLabs CEO Phil McKinney told me at SCTE TechExpo. And while it may sound complicated, DOCSIS 4.0 is essentially about how you can “open up as much spectrum as possible to send as many bits as fast as possible” to reach 10 Gbps speeds.
