🎯 Why will it take over 200 years for women to achieve 50% representation on boards of directors? Research shared during annual Lean In Network Greece (Athens) Summit 2024 shows that, at the current rate of change, women won’t reach equal representation in leadership positions for another two centuries. This statistic should stop us all in our tracks. As a coach, especially one focused on empowering women in their professional journeys, I see this as a call to action for all of us—leaders, businesses, and individuals alike. Despite years of advocacy and progress, deep-rooted structural barriers and unconscious biases continue to slow women’s access to leadership roles. So what’s holding us back •Bias in hiring and promotions: Women often face implicit biases that question their leadership potential or subject them to double standards. Lack of Suport : Women are still expected to balance career advancement with caregiving roles, with limited support for flexible working models. •Insufficientmentorshipandsponsorship: Career growth depends on opportunities and guidance that women often receive less frequently than their male peers. But here’s the good news: We can accelerate change. By fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging, investing in the professional development of women, and challenging our biases, we can close the gap faster. And let’s not underestimate the power of role models—when women see other women in leadership, it opens their horizons for what’s possible. As a coach, I work every day to help women break these barriers, realize their full potential, and create personal brands that reflect their leadership strengths. Levelling the playing field. In our role at INCLUDE Consulting a key part of my work involves supporting organisations in building and developing gender-diverse leadership teams. When organisations first approach us, many tell us that they have tried various interventions to increase female representation at the leadership level, such as mentorship, maternity benefits, flexible policy, and training. Yet, when measuring the results, there is a clear gap. While there is a huge amount of activities and inputs, the outputs and impact are minimal. The Global Gender Report that the World Economic Forum published this week further supports this. The number of women in leadership in Singapore has dropped to just ⬇️ 26%, and the number of female CEOs to just ⬇️ 12.5%. Left unresolved, teams become less diverse, and the rate of innovation declines, affecting financial performance. This is where our team at INCLUDE has made a huge difference by supporting organisations to narrow the gender gap and address systemic challenges through our Sponsorship program. One that does not try to “fix” women or get them to act differently but rather supports them with the tools and skills to navigate the biases they face in the workplace. The focus is not just on high-potential women. To shift the needle, we also need to include men and influential leaders in conversations. There are a few people you meet in your professional life who have such a long-lasting impact on your journey and for whom you remain in close contact as you travel along that journey. These two women are definitely part of that "tribe" and I am so blessed to call them my dear friends. Lourdes Coss, MPA, NIGP-CPP, CPPO, Tammy Rimes, MPA and I have shared alot over the years. Each time we land in the same place, we pick right back up where we left off. We have created together, we have laughed together, we have shared some of the most painful parts of our lives together...we have always been there to share a quiet moment of sorrow, an amazing victory, or endless laughs over wine. When you find the right people, great ideas grow. I am proud that a conversation and an idea that we talked about many years ago, led to an intentional discussion about women in executive leadership roles. That grew into a published article about Women in Procurement, then facilitating over a dozen panels of women leaders from across the county (where we added even more women to our journey), to what today has exploded into a social network of over 1,000 women from public sector procurement (thanks to two other dear friends that joined our journey, Ginny Justiniano, NIGP-CPP, CPPB and Stacy Gregg). Today, the #ProcurementWomenLeaders network continues to connect women from across North America in procurement who are leaders in their own communities, to share, to grow, to laugh, to learn....most of all, to be present for each other. Never underestimate the impact and power of a conversation and an idea among friends who share a common experience...that brief moment could lead to something that could impact so many more lives. And even better, when that idea leads to others' ideas...and a movement begins. Ladies, never underestimate the power and impact of your ideas and your experiences. Yesterday I tried something a bit different. Attending the "POWERful Women" State of the Nation event as a man was an enlightening and inspiring experience. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the warmth and inclusiveness of the atmosphere and that everyone really wanted me there, tinged with disappointment there were so few of us. Initially, I was surprised to see the focus on middle management in the principal target of 40% representation by 2030 rather than the highest executive levels. However, as the discussion progressed, it became clear how pivotal this focus truly is. The parallels between this and the challenges of digital transformation became apparent – both grappling with the "permafrost" layer of mid-level management that can often resist change and innovation. Middle management plays a crucial role in driving organisational success, and empowering this group can lead to profound shifts within a company. It was a powerful reminder that fostering leadership and support at all levels is essential for sustained growth and progress. There was some stagnation in the progress of the executive level numbers this year but encouraging to see the progress over the 10 years that the organisation has been in place, a 300% increase. Time for some of us males to offer a hand and help push for continued progress in the next few years? I particularly liked their clear definition of Leadership as Executive plus direct reports & Middle Management as the following two layers. Looking forward to calculating our numbers. A number of companies were applauded for reaching the 2030 targets well ahead of schedule showing what is possible. The panel session added some golden nuggets: - Push for inclusion as a target and monitor diversity as an outcome of success.  - When nurturing diverse talent through the business consciously place them with inclusive leaders to maximise their chances of success, don't let chance place them with more challenges than they already have.
