Our Mental Fitness influences our experience of life 1 in 8 adults experience mental disorders ranging from anxiety disorders, and depressive disorders to eating disorders. But this does not mean the remaining 7 don't suffer their minds. For most adults today, 🧠Stress and anxiety are everyday companions 🧠Our thoughts take us on a rollercoaster ride between the past and the future 🧠Our emotions constantly overwhelm us, making it harder to show up at work and for our personal goals 🧠Our actions are reactive or compulsive and we feel drained and exhausted at the end of most days. Mental Fitness is a state of well-being where we have a positive sense of how we feel, think, and act. 3 keys to sustained mental well-being 1. Get the basics right - What we do daily influences our mental health significantly. Diet, exercise, sleep, and interpersonal interactions are the basics of good mental hygiene. Eat nutritiously, move your body regularly, get good quality sleep, and have healthy interactions with people around you. 2. Self Check-ins - Take a few moments each day to check in with yourself. Ask yourself at the end of each day - What am I thinking about? How am I feeling? What can I do better tomorrow? #Journaling is my go-to practice for this. 3. Seek help - We don't have to do it all by ourselves. Have a robust support system, go beyond the superficial have deeper conversations with your friends and family, and seek professional help when needed. Get Your Heart Pumping for Better Mental Health: With anxiety, depression and stress on the rise, finding ways to boost mental wellbeing has never been more important. While there are many self-care strategies to try, getting your heart rate up with cardio exercise is one of the most effective. Aerobic activities like running, cycling, swimming and dance have been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Studies show just 30 minutes of cardio several times a week can improve cognitive function and emotional regulation. There are a few key reasons why cardio is so good for mental health: ◾ It releases feel-good endorphins, neurotransmitters that boost mood. ◾ It reduces immune system inflammation, which is linked to depression. ◾ It improves sleep, giving your brain time to recharge. ◾ It increases blood flow to the brain, energising you. Of course, getting motivated can be difficult when you're already feeling low. Starting small is key - even a 10-minute walk has benefits. Many also find social exercise more enjoyable, so joining a class or going with a friend can help. While many turn to medication or therapy to tackle mental health struggles (which are extremely valid), cardio is one of the most accessible, low-cost ways to see real improvement in things like mood, focus and resilience.
