Today @ Port of Thunder Bay, operations continue as the season nears a close and lakers - such as the MV CSL St. Laurent (seen here) - arrive at Keefer Terminal for winter layup. 🚢❄ The “winter lay-up” or “winter works” period is an annual occurrence for Great Lakes lakers during which lock closures effectively halt shipping. This provides time for all manner of vessel maintenance including dry dockings, surveys, steelwork, and machinery rebuilds, to list a few examples. Not all ships need extensive work, however! Many are immediately winterized, tied up to berths at ports across the Great Lakes, and watched over by a “Ship Keeper” (one person designated to stay onboard and monitor the vessel while it’s laid-up) until the shipping season resumes. Taking advantage of Thunder Bay’s natural harbour, Keefer Terminal is a favoured spot for many lakers due to its spaciousness, centrality, and convenience! Whether its moving cargo or providing a safe place to land, Port of Thunder Bay is ready to accommodate the needs of all inbound or passing lakers and salties. ⚓

I love my job as the marine engine sales person for Cummins Inc. in Alaska and part of the PNW. As a born & raised Alaska boy, I also love commercial fishing for wild, sustainable seafood in the oceans of Alaska as I’ve done every year since the summer of 1989….salmon, crab, herring & cod. Is it possible to do both, they ask?! Well….this is where my two worlds mesh. To be effective in any sales role, you need passion and a solid grasp on the industry you’re selling into. I firmly believe there is no greater way to gain knowledge & understanding of the industry I sell into, than to physically invest and become a Cummins customer and fisherman in that exact industry. I have the passion, so every summer, I take a 3 week working vacation from Cummins to get some fresh ocean air, reset my mind and soul and go chase wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon up in Bristol Bay, Alaska on my commercial fishing boat, the F/V Twin Tuition…which is Powered by Cummins & Onan! I flip the script and I become a Cummins end user/customer for the summer. I want to put myself in my customer’s shoes, be actively engaged and a be part of the industry where I sell Cummins marine engines. When a marine customer calls me for help: 1.). I want to be responsive 2.). I want to be credible 3.). I want to be knowledgeable 4.). I want to be relatable 5.). I want to be trustworthy Here’s to 3 weeks aboard the Twin Tuition chasing wild, sustainable, Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon…..the days are long, the work is hard, the sleep is not plentiful, the showers are few & far between, but the pb&j sandwiches and Mac & Cheese taste like filet minion and King Crab because we’re so hungry! #commercialfishing #cummins #sales

Time for career presentation! 🎙 Next in line is Sales Manager and Ship Agent Johan Järnefelt from Galea Shipping!🤗 🔎How long have you been with the company? About 140 weeks. By late winter, it will be three years since I left the seas and started from Rauanheimo, and later moving to Galea Shipping as a Ship Agent and Sales Manager. 🔎The best part of your job? The work is incredibly diverse and dynamic, with a wide-ranging role that keeps things interesting. But really, it's only possible because of the productive, flexible, and caring team that gets things done together—even across great distances. 🔎The most challenging part of your job? It definitely ties back to the limits of time. During peak periods, there are plenty of urgent, day-to-day matters, and at the same time, you’re trying to make progress on big-picture tasks and goals. 🔎Fun fact about you? For some reason, I can flip any word or sentence backwards in my head and speak it fluently that way too. #kwhlogistics #galeashipping #career #kwhlogisticsfamily

Why Captain’s cabin is always on starboard side ? Captain’s cabin on the starboard side is a tradition that has been since many years but there has been some exceptions to it where captain’s cabin is on port side. Leaving aside the exceptions, in old days, the starboard side was considered superior to port side in every sense, be it flag etiquettes or two watch system in old days where more experienced staff used to keep watch on starboard side, the starboard side was considered superior to port side. Captain being overall incharge of the ship was considered superior to all the crew onboard and was given superior side of the ship. In modern days however it is not superiority that is considered for captain cabin to starboard side. Starboard side is give way side in ROR (Rule of the road) and captain is expected to see the traffic on starboard side of his ship just to be aware of the traffic situation where it is his ship’s duty to take action. He can then also monitor if the officer on watch has taken the required action to avoid close quarter situation.
