It’s specifically engineered for #low-pulsation metering of ammonia in dual-fuel marine engines. The fact that it can reach pressures of up to 400 bar while reducing operational costs with fewer components is a game-changer for efficiency and reliability in fuel supply systems. During his presentation at the CIMAC booth at SMM Hamburg 2024, Dr. Philipp Stuhlpfarrer, Director of Innovation, took a closer look at individual alternative fuels and their properties in relation to their influence on torsional vibration. The transition to new fuels for large engines in marine applications is driven by environmental regulations and the need for sustainable energy solutions. Fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen are emerging as alternatives to traditional fossil fuels. However, adopting these new fuels presents unique challenges for the powertrain and torsional vibration characteristics as they can affect engine performance, leading to different engine dynamics. In the future, the majority of our customers' transport needs will be best met by eTrucks – for special applications, hydrogen combustion, or eventually fuel cell technology, will serve as a suitable supplement. That is why we are the first European truck manufacturer to launch a small hydrogen combustion engine series with the MAN hTGX. Around 200 units will be dispatched to our customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, and selected non-European countries as early as 2025. The MAN hTGX, with its alternative zero-emission drive variant will primarily be used for special applications. For example, heavy goods transportation, such as timber or construction deliveries, in areas with inadequate charging infrastructure or where hydrogen is readily available today. The vehicle is a valuable addition to our zero-emission portfolio, yet our focus on the decarbonisation of road freight transport remains on battery-electric vehicles. These currently offer clear advantages over other drive concepts in terms of energy efficiency, operation, and energy costs.
