#EU-Parliament briefing on the #Green Claim Directive: Many labels claim products are 'greener' 'more sustainable' or 'eco-friendlier' than others. In 2020, there were around 230 active ecolabels in Europe, and 100 private green energy labels have been mapped in the EU. Can consumers or companies be sure that these claims are based on solid grounds? In 2020, the European Commission found that 53 % of examined environmental claims in the EU were vague, misleading or unfounded, and 40 % were unsubstantiated. The absence of specific EU rules contributes to this situation. The 2019 communication on the European Green Deal stressed the need to rethink a broad range of EU policies to transform the EU economy for a more sustainable future – including those policies affecting production and consumption.

🚨 New Green Claims Directive 🚨 The European Council is gearing up to start negotiations with the European Parliament on the new Green Claims Directive. This initiative aims to combat greenwashing and ensure that companies’ environmental claims are reliable, comparable, and verifiable. Key highlights: 📋 Third-party verification: environmental claims must be independently verified. 🌍 Strict Carbon Credits regulation: clear distinction between emissions reductions and removals. 🏷️ Transparent labelling: new rules for conflict-free, scientifically reviewed environmental labels. Although the directive's aim of creating a more sustainable market is commendable, it will undoubtedly increase the administrative burden on businesses. Nevertheless, if successfully implemented, it will set a significant global precedent for environmental legislation. #Sustainability #GreenClaimsDirective #EU #EnvironmentalPolicy #Greenwashing #CorporateResponsibility #SustainableBusiness

In an article written for edie, Iyesogie Igiehon explores how companies can prepare for the EU’s Green Claims Directive. 🌱 The directive establishes new criteria for companies making environmental claims about their products or services. Aimed at enabling clear communication and combatting greenwashing, it sets out requirements for substantiation of environmental claims and standards on the use of environmental labels. Key takeaways from the European Parliament's recent stance include stringent regulations on carbon credit claims and higher requirements for claims on future environmental performance. The directive is subject to further negotiation but once passed, it could have far-reaching implications for businesses operating in the EU market. 🔗 Click the link below to read more. #GreenClaimsDirective #Sustainability #Greenwashing

In this week’s #ESG and #Climate News: - The EU adopted its far-reaching supply chain law, #CS3D, but as the elections approach, the #EUGreenDeal may be vulnerable. - The US’s new Senior Advisor for Clean Energy, John Podesta, announced a new climate and trade task force aimed at limiting carbon in imported goods. - New #EPA rules will require coal-powered electricity plants to close or capture 90% of their carbon by 2039. - With so much ‘doomersim’ around, #EarthDay is a good time to take stock of environmental accomplishments. - The theme of Earth Day was planet vs. plastics, while more than 170 countries are meeting in Ottawa to craft a global treaty to reduce plastic waste. - The whiplash-inducing rise and fall of ESG in recent years has been dramatic, but it is no fad..some states are now backtracking on anti-ESG laws. Green Deal Update ❗ The EPP bloc (centre-right) in the European Parliament has started to reframe the Green Deal. The aim is to "continue to implement the Green Deal and turn it into a Green Deal for Growth" (main concern: competitiveness). Not surprising, the new agenda backtracks on some sustainability measures. 1️⃣ MORE TECHNOLOGICAL FLEXIBILITY: The aim will be to "revise the rules for CO2 reduction for new cars and vans to allow for the use of alternative zero-emission fuels beyond 2035". (https://lnkd.in/d8nM5xHr) This is already included into EU law, but the EPP aims for a more comprehensive EU strategy on low-carbon fuels, e-fuels, and biofuels. Technology neutrality is frequently cited as a key principle. 2️⃣ POSTPONING DEFORESTATION LAW: The implementation of the deforestation regulation should be postponed (likely to 2027) to reduce the bureaucratic burden (much-cited argument against all sorts of sustainability regulations). 3️⃣ ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION "WITHIN LIMITS": Concerns and ambitions around preservation are reduced in the draft document (compared to the original Green Deal), and farmers' interests are cited more frequently. (https://lnkd.in/dYaZqaCt) The direction of the journey seems to be clear - the Green Deal will enter into a new phase of reduced ambitions and slower policy-making, with a much stronger focus on the economy and competitiveness. The EU Social Democrats (S&D) and Liberals (Renew) have adopted similar plans (https://lnkd.in/dnBxt_sw). BUT, the European Greens have a good strategic position right now, as von der Leyen may need some of their votes (she may be forced to drop some plans). #eugreendeal, #climatechange

🌿 The EU Council Agrees on New Rules: A Major Leap Against Greenwashing! 🌍 #greenwashing ✅ The European Council has just approved major measures to combat greenwashing, enhancing environmental transparency and accountability. These new rules will require businesses to substantiate, communicate, and verify their green claims, ensuring they are backed by independent verification and scientific evidence. 🔍 This effort tackles misleading environmental labels and is part of a broader EU Commission package, including the Ecodesign Regulation and updates to the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and Consumer Rights Directive, all aiming to enhance green transition, circular economy, and promote the right to repair. ♻️ #ecodesign #circulareconomy #righttorepair 🌿 A key change distinguishes between "offset claims" and "contribution claims" when using carbon credits for climate-related claims like "carbon neutral" or "net zero." Offset claims must prove a net zero target, show progress towards decarbonization, and disclose the percentage of total greenhouse gas emissions offset. This distinction aligns with the broader goals of the Ecodesign Directive to effectively reduce environmental impacts. #Greenwashing #Sustainability #ConsumerProtection #Environmentalclaims #GreenTransition #Circulareconomy #Righttorepair #Ecodesign For more check the link below:
