We welcome you to visit the 23rd Serpentine Pavilion: 'Archipelagic Void'! Tracing the history of past Serpentine Pavilions, architect Minsuk Cho (Mass Studies) observed that they often emerge as a singular structure situated at the centre of the Serpentine South lawn. So when he designed the one for this year, he approached the centre as an open space surrounded by five ‘islands’, each of which are unique in size, height and form. This layout references traditional Korean houses that feature a 'madang', a central, open courtyard that connects to various residential quarters, accommodating individual everyday activities and larger collective rituals throughout the changing seasons. We look forward to your visit! 🎟️ Free admission 📍 Serpentine South 📆 7 Jun - 27 Oct 2024 Check our website for opening hours: https://lnkd.in/e4bAFrCm #SerpentinePavilion #SerpentinePavilion2024 - Photos: Iwan Baan Special thanks to our headline partner Goldman Sachs for their tenth consecutive year of support.

Tatami is not just a mat. It's a lifestyle In Japanese culture, the importance of the tatami's appearance, texture, softness, flexibility and smell was emphasized for harmony and human peace. The modest dimensions created an attitude of contentment with little. It is customary not to step on the side strips of fabric along the tatami, which gets used to a perception of an orderly world with boundaries that should not be stepped on. The order on the level also led to a way of thinking of a fixed and hierarchical social order. The structure of the city is also based on this approach, a house address in Japan is not a number on the street but a slot within the slots of the area and the neighborhood. The modesty of dimensions and the necessity to walk barefoot in the living space resulted in an attitude of self-abnegation and intense emotional control that was characteristic of traditional Japan, and still has an influence on Japanese life. www.efratmeiri.co.il #efrat_meiri #israeli_archtecture #architecture #newarchitecture #green_architecture #new_house

Working in an industry where we seek out imperfections in buildings as #charteredsurveyors at Watsons Property, I was fascinated to visit a building where imperfection has become perfection! According to experts, the tower should have toppled. By 1990, the tower was leaning a whole 5.5 degrees and the tower should have collapsed at 5.44 degrees. Over the years, various efforts to straighten the tower, including misguided interventions in the 19th and early 20th centuries, only served to exacerbate its tilt. It wasn’t until a comprehensive restoration completed in 2001 that the Tower was stabilised. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was not deliberate – unsurprisingly the identity of the architect who designed the original project is unknown – a local guide informed me that he had run away when it became evident there was an issue - never to be recognised for the historical monument he had created. Initially intended as a bell tower for Pisa Cathedral, it began leaning just five years into its construction in 1173 due to unstable soil. Pisa’s marshy land, composed of soft clay, shells, and sand, resulted in a foundation that was insufficient to support a structure of such ambition. What struck me most during my visit was how the Leaning Tower of Pisa has now become a symbol of endurance and resilience. During the second world war, German soldiers allegedly used the building as an ideal place for snipers. However, upon seeing the beautiful tower and its surrounding areas, American soldiers did not have the heart to tear it down. Its tilt, once seen as a flaw, is now celebrated and cherished. This shift in perception challenges the conventional view of perfection reminding us that success can often arise in the most unlikely situations. #history #buildings #travel #inspiration #italy #photooftheday
